Is Consciousness Dependent on Time or Complexity?

Thanks apeiron, I'll read the paper. In my OP I posed questions more than claims and I got interesting replys. I'm pretty confident I can now safely throw away my old Game of Life source printouts :) Yes I admit I'm a bit seduced by Tegmark, block universe, many QM worlds etc. I...

Is Consciousness Dependent on Time or Complexity?

Thank you, Q_Goest! The information was very interesting. I don't really believe a piece of paper to be conscious, but couldn't myself find (other than practical) arguments against it. Computer generated consciousness (whether possible or not) is still interesting. If you would be so kind...

Is Consciousness Dependent on Time or Complexity?

Yes I admit that, that's why I wrote "extremely controversial". Indeed if the simulation is impossible, that would nicely solve my questions (as obsolete). If you can simulate consciousness with a computer, you'll get many weird possibilities.

Is Consciousness Dependent on Time or Complexity?

Thanks for your comments! I understand your claim sounds natural, but I'm still not convinced. Wikipedia (the most realiable source of all) defines Turing machines as "A Turing machine that is able to simulate any other Turing machine is called a Universal Turing machine". I can't find...

Is Consciousness Dependent on Time or Complexity?

IF consciousness is a result of complex physical processes, and could thus be simulated by a hugely complex computer program (which should not be extremely controversial) - WHAT IF the finite execution of the computer program would be presented, not with temporal steps (using the time...

Is Consciousness the True Measure of Time?

Thanks Apeiron, really clear and interesting information indeed. ConradDJ, yes I have been mostly thinking about physics (closer to my background) - but have been interested how we can feel the "present" so strongly even if does not exist.

Is Consciousness the True Measure of Time?

    >> Where is the "point of time" if not the present? > I don't really believe there is... Sorry, I guess I didn't really answer your question. My answer is: in every point of my (past, current and future) lifetime.

Is Consciousness the True Measure of Time?

    > Where is the "point of time" if not the present? I don't really believe there is such thing as a "present", in the meaning that there would be a moment in time that would have such a universal meaning. I understand the special relativity so that all the points in the time are equal, pretty...

Is Consciousness the True Measure of Time?

My current (pun intended) understanding is that there is really no such thing as the "present". I see it only as an illusion created by the cumulative experiences, stored in our memory cells, in each point of time. I would be very grateful to be proved wrong, since the concept of eternality...
