Job Skills I finally got my bachelor's degree in physics, now what?
I agree, but what kind of internship would you suggest for a typical physics students? Computer Science students get internships at software companies, and engineering students get internships at engineering companies. But I think most physics students would struggle to qualify for either of those.- pi-r8

Engineering Senior mechanical engineering student With a 3.5 GPA but I really hate it
You haven't actually worked as an engineer right? Just classes? I think you should try working for a while to see how you feel about the actual work, since it can be very different from classes. It'll also let you save up some money which will help if you want to make a change later. It also...- pi-r8

Job Skills I finally got my bachelor's degree in physics, now what?
$100k+ starting salaries are pretty normal if you get a software engineering job in the bay area: https://www.glassdoor.com/Salaries/san-francisco-entry-level-software-engineer-salary-SRCH_IL.0,13_IM759_KO14,43.htm I've heard that Google is $140k these days. You don't have to work overtime on...- pi-r8

Job Skills Got my BS in Physics but I don't know what to apply for
I don't think it's fair to compare students from different majors like that. Physics students consistently have some of the highest SAT scores of any major, and (in my experience) they tend to be much stronger students than average. This is especially true at low prestige schools where a lot of...- pi-r8

Job Skills How to quickly prepare for a Data Science Career
This might not be the best place to ask, since as far as I know, none of the regular posters here actually work as a data scientist? The other data science sites I've seen are inundated with students trying to break into the field, but very few actual working data scientists.- pi-r8

Engineering Should I major in Computer Science, Physics, or Aerospace Engineering?
This might be too simple, but have you tried just looking at the "careers" section on the websites of a company you might want to work for someday? What kind of degree are they looking for in their job postings? My guess is that the jobs asking for a CS degree or software engineering experience...- pi-r8

Engineering Still Struggling finding a data science job
Software developer. Going on 7 years of job experience. I can't say that I'm any kind of all-knowing career advice guru but... who is?- pi-r8

Engineering Still Struggling finding a data science job
I don't know any perfect solution, sorry. All I can think of is things that are worth trying: -Show one of your resumes/cover letters to someone who works in EE or CS. Might be worth hiring a professional resume service too. As an immigrant, maybe you're not hitting the right notes. For example...- pi-r8

Engineering Still Struggling finding a data science job
My best guess is that there's a weird mix of under/overqualified going on here. People see a PhD in Electrical Engineering, and assume you're going to be a highly trained specialist. Unfortunately it sounds like yours was in a really niche field, so you've started applying to a lot of jobs...- pi-r8

Engineering Still Struggling finding a data science job
My impression is that it's simply worse in Data Science than in most other STEM fields. Admittedly I don't have any actual numbers to back that up, it's just my impression from reading about the field. It's easy for companies to hype it up like "the future is here! Artificial Intelligence!" and...- pi-r8

Engineering Still Struggling finding a data science job
The problem is, it's also a field that lots and lots of other people are trying to get into. You've got competition from experienced programmers, statisticians, and data analysts all trying to get a piece of the pie, not to mention people that actually got specialized degrees focused on ML...- pi-r8

Engineering Still Struggling finding a data science job
Wait a second. Data science isn't your field- it's a pretty different field. Do you know anyone who works in *electrical engineering* who could look at it? Those people you mention from your department also sound different. cloud computing, image processing, computer vision are all more on the...- pi-r8

Other Who are the right people to connect with?
Maybe this is too obvious, but have you tried just asking the people you already know (who have jobs)? They don't have to be managers. There's a good chance they'll know if their company is hiring, what they're looking for (not necessarily the same as the listed qualifications for the job), and...- pi-r8

Engineering Still Struggling finding a data science job
I agree with what the others said- it's weird that you can't even get an interview with what I would think is a strong credential (PhD in EE/wireless communications). Getting a cert in data science or networking aren't *bad* options, but it's not like you can just wave one of those certs in...- pi-r8

Physics What are the potential career options for a Nuclear Theorist?
To be honest, I don't think you really know what a nuclear physicist studies, or what the practical difference is between the life of a theoretical and experimental physicist. I kind of wish that more physics programs asked that as a requirement for admission. Most jobs ask for a cover letter...- pi-r8
