I'm trying to look for papers with funny abstracts (in particular, there is one I saw a while ago, I believe it was physics, that had an abstract that only said no which I am trying to find, but I would love to see other funny one as well.)- PoyDuo

What is a Hard Science and Which Undergraduate Degrees Fall Under This Category?
Some people would consider it a hard science, some wouldn't. If you aren't sure, you could email the program-- though I would say you should probably be fine applying to such programs.- PoyDuo

I've always wondered about this, not sure if a Science forum can help
Interesting fact: At least in Texas, I know that some of the liberal arts requirements in college (government and US history) were added to help fight communism during the cold war. So it seems there is more to the gen ed requirements than just wanting to be well rounded. That being said, the...- PoyDuo

Math Is there a Connection between Applied Mathematics and Astronomy?
While researching graduate schools, I did stumble across one mathematics professor who listed his interest as the mechanics of galaxy formation (or something along those lines). If only I could remember where I saw it...- PoyDuo

Mathematics & Ethics: Is Pursuing Beauty Useless?
I do have the feeling that I should be doing something more directly useful fairly often. However, what I tell myself is that if I end up researching math I will also probably be teaching, and that will be the useful thing I do (I imagine most pure math people are in the same position). Or...- PoyDuo

Programs Applied Math Degree: Honors or Minor in EE?
Just to clarify, where are you located (as in which country)? Cause there is a difference between honors in different places (some places honors involve an extra 'honors year', which is different then an honors degree in somewhere like the US, I think. In the first type it might actually be...- PoyDuo

Do Graduate Schools Require Knowledge of a Foreign Language for Admission?
A lot of math programs do have 'foreign language requirements', but most are a joke-- often they give you a short math paper and a dictionary and ask you to translate it in a few hours.- PoyDuo

Which is the better choice, linear algebra or differential equations?
I would suggest both. That being said, however, you might end up learning allot of linear algebra in a differential equations class (I know I did), so if you have to choose one...- PoyDuo

Geometry & Topology REU Programs - Williams, Cornell, Tennessee, Indiana?
In my personal experience (this might vary from REU to REU), it is mostly just lying low, yes, though relatively little time is spent discussing the problems... Usually, no matter how much you like it, having a break from your research at the end of the day is nice =)- PoyDuo

Geometry & Topology REU Programs - Williams, Cornell, Tennessee, Indiana?
I went to Greensboro. I don't know how it stands on prestige (hopefully high =) ), but I thought it was fun. Very work intensive, but worth it. That, and the program is fairly successful in terms of getting its results into publication/conferences...- PoyDuo
