Darn... looks like that book (Linear Algebra and Geometry) is out of print... sounds like an interesting read (I could use a refresher for sure).

    New Idea/Twist for a Time Travel-Like Story

I think that an alternative hypothesis though could be that if you sent information back (like how bad Hitler would turn out to be, or telling Lincoln not to go to Ford Theatre, etc.) is that the information might be construed as a hoax or such and dismissed by those who might be empowered to...

Need some help with a fictional math equation

I could see another factor in the "equation" being the rate of development being hindered by forces opposed to such developments. For example, those in power (the Emperor, Vader, etc.) would not want any forces developed that could ultimately lead to their demise and the downfall of their power...

Other What are you reading now? (STEM only)

I would agree with this assessment. I think it is really geared to teaching you how to think and approach learning what can be a daunting subject. The goal, IMHO, is to encourage an admiration of the science of physics and the desire to want to learn. As Schwichtenberg writes (paraphrasing...

Our Beautiful Universe - Photos and Videos

Thanks for the link @collinsmark -- that looks excellent! I am checking that out now!

Other What are you reading now? (STEM only)

I just finished that and found it quite a good read. It also encouraged me to pick up Feynman's Lectures on Physics - I just started Volume I. I always found Feynman to be a fascinating mind and excellent teacher. If my physics teachers were even half as good as he (and many others like Hawking...

This is why EM interference can be an issue....

If the TV is that old it would certainly use a CRT, but it would scan at 525 lines/sec not 625. I find it odd one old TV could knock an entire village out, certainly one would suspect that it must be producing a large, unsuppressed EM field. I am a Ham operator too, so I have to be cognizant...

Our Beautiful Universe - Photos and Videos

This one is a favorite of mine, the star Eta Carinae and the Homunculus Nebula. When this star goes (if it hasn't already) the show is going to be spectacular!

B If a coronal ejection like this happened during a total eclipse ....

Sorry Dave, yes that is the finder scope attached to the Coronado (I wasn't 100% sure if the whole kit was called that). I got the whole assembly from OPT many years ago because I wanted to be able to sun-gaze safely ! I looked on the body of the scope but I didn't see a reference to the model...

A Developing the Feynman diagram expansion

As Kipling wrote "You're a better man than I, Gunga Din!" I like that you wrote it out and explained what you found. I am extremely rusty. The chain rule is something I need to read up on more, I think it would help me sort of get the grasp of many of the equations, especially with...

B If a coronal ejection like this happened during a total eclipse ....

I have the Coronado "Sol Ranger" -- has anyone used that? I got it a while ago. It's a nice scope but I haven't used it a lot. I remember going to Maine and there were some amateurs who let me look look through their scope. The Sun was amazing! Nice pics!

    Planetary scientist/atmospheric physicist - hi

Welcome! You "had" me at Saturn! You have a wide variety of interests and areas of study, wow! I am sure we can all learn from you as you learn from us as well! It's great to have you here and we hope that you find enjoyment in the discussions. I am hoping to learn a great deal here...

Can renewable energy and quantum gravity save humanity?

Hi Svend and :welcome: ! Who knows, maybe you can unify renewable energy AND quantum gravity! Don't sell yourself short, though. I believe it was Stephen Jay Gould who said that there is genius in everyone, and who knows how many people were as smart as Einstein but never had any opportunity to...

RIP Joan Feynman: A Woman Scientist Ahead of Her Time

I hadn't heard that -- thanks for sharing! I know Richard was very fond of her and encouraged her desire and love of nature.
