Being a mathematician is hard. My father is extremely talented and went to Harvard for a PhD in math. He decided not to pursue it because it requires a lot of socializing and shcmoozing to become a professor.
Ritalin is a good drug for ADHD, but we don't know much about its long term use and effects. It also can be used for depression, although there isn't much research into the effectiveness in that use.

Depression doesn't make sense. A lot of it is just in the mind. It can be really, really hard for your friend to believe that things can get better, but they can. Just being for them unconditionally can mean a lot.
