How ugly is your physics department?
Well I'm in an astronomy department not physics, but we share the same building. We always complain how we want a new building. It's quite old and boring and chopped up into many small floors. All the new and shiny buildings around campus are for computer sciences or bio/chemistry. The...- renz

Coffee. Yes coffee. Do you really feel a difference ?
I'm a little bit sensitive to caffeine I think. I can't drink half a cup after 3pm or I will be up way past midnight. I also feel jittery even after a cup of latte. I was up until 4am last night because I went to a coffee shop and ordered a decaf latte. It was definitely not decaf. I didn't...- renz

Weird phobia that I can't explain.
I think I have a similar kind of phobia. In my case it's not water but what's in the water, mostly fish. I get uncomfortable looking at pictures of fish, especially those in deep water. Thinking about it already make my heart races a bit. I have no idea what's the cause. The only thing I...- renz

Are You a Night Owl or Early Bird?
I've been having a lot of trouble trying to keep a regular schedule. I plan every day to wake up early, before 10:30am, and go to bed before 3am. And almost everyday I failed. I guess I'm really not a morning person. I feel like I get better sleep while I am on observing run. I like to...- renz

News USA Presidential Debate #2 Observations
I don't have much background, but I am trying to understand Romney's tax plan. He said (from the first debate) that his tax plan is revenue neutral. And from the second debate he said the top 5 percent of taxpayers will continue to pay 60 percent of the income tax while the middle income will...- renz

News USA Presidential Debate #2 Observations
I wish I am at home right now watching the debate, but I'm still working. Guess I have to watch it later. Hopefully there will be a video of the whole debate later tonight so I can watch it when I get home.- renz

Do Physics majors watch reality tv?
I like few of them. The rest I can't stand at all. I do watch "the Amazing race". It is pretty entertaining and makes me add some of the places they visited to my travel list. I'm also a secret fan of survivor. It gets annoying sometimes but if for nothing else I would watch it because of...- renz

What Is the Most Common Gas in Earth's Atmosphere?
70%. Showed me I need to learn more about geology and biology. I forgot a whole lot of what I learned. Also got a bunch of solar-system questions wrong, which I feel bad about considering I'm an astronomer.- renz

Its crazy to think its all actually out there
Well that is the society that we choose to live in isn't it. Most people are going to do what they want to do. Especially when majority of them are doing the same thing. You can start by getting to know about the place we live in a bit better ;) Then do whatever you think should be done...- renz

What is the true value of a science degree in today's society?
off topic, so physics is http://www.walletpop.com/2010/05/10/the-10-most-profitable-college-majors/" That's for people who go to non-academic route after their BS degree I suppose? :( Starting salary doesn't seem right. Why am I in grad school?- renz

What Does the Spiral in a Sestina Mean?
Read the spiral clockwise. Follow roman numeral for each set of 6 numbers (read each column). So the first set (I) is just {123456}. The second set (II) is {615243}; that comes from following the spiral clockwise. The first knot is at I-6, then I-1, then I-5, and so on. For the third set (III)...- renz

Why Did Borders Close?
that's horrible. The one close to my house is still open though. I hope it won't close. Although I usually go to B&N. It's still sad when bookstores close down.- renz

Programs Applying for a Physics Ph.D.: Tips, Advice & Possibilities
Yes it is possible to do it in four days. I do assume you have thought about applying for PhD a lot before now. For example you know why you want to do it, do you have an idea roughly what you will be doing in the program, do you like research, what kind of experiences you have, why are you...- renz

High School What Quotes Capture the Legacy of the Atomic Bomb?
I don't remember exactly the names of the book i read, but there are many of them. It should not be hard to find. Other than Oppenheimer, Feynman is another person whose story about his involvement really fascinate me. He wrote about it and how he felt at the time in one of his book. I think...- renz
