Why didn't you do a more lucrative or easier career?

First off, 80-100k is the ceiling for average engineers. The best of the best make way more than that in engineering and most other professional fields. I know for a fact that the best EEs at a large defense contractor make ~200k and gets a ~30k-80k bonus on top of that (takes like 30 years to...

Why is the speed of light constant?

This is a whole different philosophical debate on whether mathematics are invented or discovered. I like to think they are discovered, simply because I like the idea of the universe having some kind of ultimate structure/order to it, even if we can't fully perceive it. I feel that...

    Gravitational time dilation reason

I may be missing something, but initially the photon is "massless" with E=hv. It is then sent in the air into the magical energy to mass converter machine, where it is converted into a mass m=hv/c2. Since it is no longer a photon it no longer has the energy hv, as it was converted to a mass...

Completely bombed my english final FML

Don't worry about it. Go ahead and talk to your teacher about the grade, I doubt it will have a huge overall effect. In the scheme of things communication skills will be more important than analyzing fiction if you're looking to go into physics/engineering etc.

Other Becoming an Engineer: Considerations and Personal Experiences

I posted a thread and got no replies, I think this may be the better place. I graduated in 2010 with a BS in Kinesiology, realizing that I didn't enjoy PT I did some "soul searching" and decided engineering was the route for me. I took classes at the CC and am now starting my first semester at...

Becoming an actuary without majoring in Acturial Science?

From what I've seen, a lot of Math departments will have an actuarial science track within their statistics program. The classes might not even be called actuarial science, but they will are geared towards helping you pass those first tests. Locrian, is passing the first couple of tests the best...

Programs Do you need a PhD to become a quant?

I merely provided an example of an alternative route, no need for the negativity. An example job posting, it tells you exactly what they are looking for. We are all pretty smart people we can figure out what degrees and training will give us these qualifications. Job Requirements...

Programs Do you need a PhD to become a quant?

What's wrong with a BS in Engineering and an MFE? The MFE will get your foot in the door and the BS is marketable if the economy turns sour. Just make sure you know your C++ and Matlab. Or you could go BS in Stat or Applied Math.

Becoming an actuary without majoring in Acturial Science?

http://www.beanactuary.org/exams/what/?fa=what-does-it-take has everything you need know Basically, you just need to pass the first couple exams. The website should have the recommended texts, study them, take the tests, pass. After you pass, apply as an actuary apprentice or something along...

Programs Do you need a PhD to become a quant?

Personally, if I was going to try and be a quant, I would pick my favorite engineering and pursue a BS (just not civil), maybe minor in math or cmsc at the same time. Work your tail off and get over a 3.5, graduate, get over a 750 on the math portion of the GRE, and hope to get into one of those...

Taking Calc 2 in the summer - good or bad idea?

I did, wasn't too bad, got a B. Half the tests were take home though. I don't think I learned the material that well, and I probably couldn't tell you if a series converged, or how to do more complicated integrals. However, I feel like those two topics can easily be looked up, and I just use...

Programs Do you need a PhD to become a quant?

There are a ton of MFE programs out now. Maybe two-fish can comment on weight of a MFE from NYU or Columbia vs NCstate or Kent. In the early days a lot of PhD's would be hired because the field was blossoming and academic positions for physicist were becoming more rare post wartime. I believe...

UBC Honours Chem Student: Choose Chemistry or Physics?

I'd say tough it out and try and get a masters in chemE. Excellent job prospects, more math, and it would only take 1 extra year than if you switched to physics now. Research the chemE MS and see if it is for you.

Engineering Advice on engineering vs eng. tech path

I think the engineers take the theory and turn it into an actual product, the tech's then take this knowledge and do the physical construction. "The distinction between engineering and engineering technology emanates primarily from differences in their educational programs. Engineering...
