Programs Academic advice for math major (peripheral)
On this note: what is applied about applied math: numerical analysis, differential equations, physics typically learned by an applied mathematician (that is, not quite enough physics mathematical physics). These subjects surely have great research potential, but do companies actually hire...- samspotting

What's the Next Step in Advanced Algebra After Artin and Dummit?
I have never studied abstract algebra, so I know very little of even what it covers. I know the basic definition of a ring and group. I was confused as to why there is so much lin alg in artin. Is it from a group theory perspective?- samspotting

What's the Next Step in Advanced Algebra After Artin and Dummit?
I just finished a very rigorous second course in linear algebra covering determinants, diagonalization, cayley hamilton thm and invariant subspaces, normal/self adjoint/unitary operators and the spectral thm, and jordan forms. I also have finished calc 3, analysis in several dimensions. I...- samspotting

Computer scientists know how to write very efficient and complicated software. Software engineers design, and execute the software development life cycle from an engineering perspective. Both can do the either ones job.- samspotting

Applied Math vs. Computer Science vs. Statistics
Software Engineering is the side of CS that deals with real world applications. Most of the stuff you will learn in CS you will forget very quickly, unless you are working in a very technical job. To AUMathTutor, I was working on large programming projects at companies involving more than a few...- samspotting

Learn Computer Programming for Applied Math & Physics Majors
There is a free ebook called http://www.htdp.org/" that you should read if you are unfamiliar with programming. It is a very nice book for absolute newbies using a restricted subset of scheme, that slowly builds you up to the full version of scheme. Do not use C as your first language, you will...- samspotting

Other Should I Become a Mathematician?
At my university my fourth year pure math courses are first year graduate courses, I've heard they are substantially more brutal than third year pure math courses. I'm totally looking forward to them. Does doing putnam style prep questions help you improve math skills for core topics like...- samspotting

Other Should I Become a Mathematician?
What is graduate analysis like? Yeah math 55 looks crazy, but I guess the bestof harvard math students can take it. I read about it in the newspaper and there was this imo competitor that said "screw it math 55 is too hard" and dropped to the easier one.- samspotting
