Why? as a predoctoral researcher, I have to be aware of the latest developments in QG, and is a good oportunity to meet people from other branches of physics. And of course, my tutors project is paying ;).
What I pity, we could meet, since I am going.
Marcus, Marcus...you got all mistaken, there are no rival theories in science! All of them are interesting approaches that has to be pursued...Although I am aware that you are involved in a war agains ST. Thank God you don't represent LQG...
In the low energy approximation you get GR. But of course ST predicts corrections away from this limit. The usual GR is not such a "perfect" description of the universe: it has been only through some local tests in the solar system and at cosmological scales is expected to be corrected: in fact...
You are completely mistaken, Marcus, as I expected. Of course, if you want to perform the explicit quantization of the string modes, we must fix a background, usually Minkowski. But that's not the whole picture, of course. You can consider a 10 dimensional space time with an arbitrary curved...
The low energy limit of ST is a Supergravity theory. The supersymmetry and the matter content of this 4 dimensional Supergravity depends on the compactification. So the matter content of the theory depends on the compactification. Since Supergravity is something like GR + matter fields, and...
Marcus, I cannot believe it. You don't know or understand how to obtain GR from ST yet you are talking about the ST program, the relevance of ST papers and even talking about the KKLT model (which in light of this I am sure you don't understand a single word). How can be possible? I am serious...
It is interesting to read "Loop vs Strings" if you want to read the discussion of Enrique Alvarez, who is a real expert in QG and a professional researcher (and to get rid of the incorrect monologue of Marcus, who is not).
I completely agree with you. In fact, when I started mi PhD one year ago I worked in the ideas proposed by my tutor, and after the first paper, I have been give completely freedom to do research. I stick into ST because it is what I like to do and because my tutor is a ST physicist. Besides, You...
I have checked, and I agree. I think it has to do with the impossibility of making any advance in the resolution of the Hamiltonian constrain, and the impossibility to reproduce the BH entropy. I think it is related too with the failure of the "big assumption" of the theory: background...
This thread have ended with the usual monologue of Marcus saying nosenses. I will say what is in everybodys mind: Marcus, you are not a physicist, you are not a researcher in ST nor LG, you have never been, so please, shut up!
The thing is, we already know that string theory is a perturbative consistent theory of gravity. We already know that we can include non perturbative effects and that gravity has a consistent unitary realization in String Theory. So the problem of Quantum Gravity in String Theory has been solved...
