Engineering Chemistry or Chemical Engineering?
Good for you. I worked with plenty of people with degrees in Biology, Animal Sciences, etc. that were still called 'Chemists' because they took Gen and O Chem and could run a test. This won't be the case with engineers.- SbF5

Engineering Chemistry or Chemical Engineering?
Being a chemistry major does require hard work as does being a talented Chemist. The problem is Chemists are dealing with smaller scale issues compared to Engineers. Plus, anyone can be called a Chemist no matter what their background is...you just need a little science background. It doesn't...- SbF5

UC Davis or UC san diego for chemical engineering?
Judging by website alone, UC Irvine seems to have something a little more put together than UCSD. UCSD only seems to have a Nanoengineering program and not a real Chem E group. You can check their department brochure here: https://webfiles.uci.edu/hdn/UCI_ChEMS_Brochure.pdf- SbF5

Is Switching from EE to Pure Math the Right Move for Me?
Do what seems best to you, whether that's Pure Math, CS or EE. Just don't lose perspective with respect to the future. Being in a job you don't like isn't worth a big paycheck. My only point is, if you can find a balance between your passion for math and an applied field where that knowledge...- SbF5

Is Switching from EE to Pure Math the Right Move for Me?
People like me eh? I look at it as return on investment. Why spend 25K to 100K of your own or your parent's money to get a piece of paper for something many people on this board could self study?According to the same site, there were just under 22K actuary jobs in 2010. Still nowhere close...- SbF5

Is Switching from EE to Pure Math the Right Move for Me?
I'm not saying they don't. It's meant to be a gut check. To me, the OP sounds like someone who is caught up in the idealism of academia and is forgetting that life continues after your degree is finished. Getting a job in "science" generally seems to involve compromise. You find something to...- SbF5

Is Switching from EE to Pure Math the Right Move for Me?
My question to you then would be this. Do you love Math enough that you'd major in it even if it meant living in a shack for the rest of your life or working at McDonalds if you couldn't find a job? It's great to be idealistic but nobody is going to care what your major was 10 years from now...- SbF5

Is Switching from EE to Pure Math the Right Move for Me?
Why not double major in EE and Math or minor in Math? You cover all of your bases that way. You could also try getting an EE internship or doing some EE research with an enginerring prof to see if you really like it or not. Working in the field is a lot different than studying the field in...- SbF5

Chemistry Future in Chemistry: Master's or Ph.D Degree Options
Some of this has been answered in other threads if you search, but here's my opinion as someone who graduated with a BS in Chem. If you only have a BS it is very likely that your job will involve being the "hands" in the lab. You will run instruments but not design experiments. You...- SbF5

Traditional Pension vs. 401k: Which is the Better Retirement Option?
I contribute enough to get the employer match in my 401K. Beyond that, there are better places to invest money. Many employer plans are limited and the costs are higher than normal.- SbF5

Traditional Pension vs. 401k: Which is the Better Retirement Option?
I've always looked at a 401K as a great option especially if there is an employer match. You have control over where your money goes and how much risk you want to tolerate; nobody can take it away from you (generally speaking). I also have a pension...and while it is great I see it as...- SbF5
