How Does Pressure Influence the Stability of Calcium Carbonate Phases?
Homework Statement Calcium carbonate (\mathrm{CaCO_3}) has two common crystal forms: Calcite and Aragonite. In room temperature and atmospheric pressure, the Calcite has Gibbs energy -1128.8 kJ/mol, volume 36.93 cm^3/mol and entropy 92.9 J/K/mol, and the Aragonite has Gibbs energy -1127.8...- Sebastian

How Does a Thin Plate Between Infinite Plates Affect Heat Transfer?
Homework Statement Two infinite plates are kept at different temperatures T_{cold}<T_{hot}, with vacuum between them. A very thin plate, isolated from the environment, is inserted between the two plates. How will the net rate of heat emission from the hot plate to the cold plate change...- Sebastian

Graduate Weak interactions that change lepton flavor
I'm taking an introduction course in elementary particle physics (3rd year level). We did study Feynman diagrams, at least qualitatively. And I understood your explanation, thanks :) Could you please answer my second question (is it possible for a changed weak current to conserve flavor)?- Sebastian

Graduate Weak interactions that change lepton flavor
Thanks! I wonder, what is the meaning of "highly suppressed" when describing flavor-changing neutral currents? Do such interactions exist and are just rare, or are they completely forbidden? Also, is it possible for a changed weak current to conserve flavor?- Sebastian

Graduate Weak interactions that change lepton flavor
Are there any W^\pm or Z^0 interactions that change lepton flavor? For example, turn an electron into a muon or vice versa? Thanks!- Sebastian

Graduate What is the difference between Lambda -> n + pi^0 and Lambda -> p + pi^- decay?
The \Lambda baryon (quark content uds) decays into n + \pi^0 or p + \pi^-. In the case \Lambda \to p + \pi^-, the s quark decays into a u quark, releasing a W^- in the process (which subsequently decays into a \pi^- meson). What happens in the \Lambda \to n + \pi^0 case? (I tried Google, but...- Sebastian

How to Extract Parameters from Non-Invertible Functions Using Experimental Data?
Homework Statement This is for a project in String Theory, but it's actually a curve fitting question. I've derived the two equations given below, for the energy E and angular momentum J of a meson as a function of some quantities \omega, T, x. Now, I have experimental data for E as a...- Sebastian

Where Can I Study for a PhD in Loop Quantum Gravity?
Marcus - thank you so much for all the information! You've been very helpful. The Master's program at Nottingham seems excellent. I would be very happy to take it. However, after giving it some thought I have decided to study for an M.Sc. here. The reason is that I have to take 4 more courses...- Sebastian

Where Can I Study for a PhD in Loop Quantum Gravity?
Thanks, marcus! That was very helpful information. :) (And thanks vicnice, too.) I wonder, marcus, what is your connection to LQG? Also, note that I'm finishing a B.Sc., not an M.Sc. I'm thinking about studying for an M.Sc. (in theoretical particle physics) and only then applying for a PhD...- Sebastian

Where Can I Study for a PhD in Loop Quantum Gravity?
I haven't thought of that. Perhaps I'll try contacting him. Thanks! Any other comments on the matter will be appreciated. PS: Please don't turn this into yet another ST vs. LQG thread...- Sebastian

Where Can I Study for a PhD in Loop Quantum Gravity?
Hi everyone, I will soon finish my B.Sc. in mathematics & physics, and I'm currently reviewing options for PhD. One of the subjects that interest me the most is LQG, but most places I've checked (MIT, Caltech, Harvard etc.) don't seem to acknowledge its existence... Please, recommend places...- Sebastian
