How can I optimize my electromagnet for maximum lifting power?
Thank you for the advice freinds, I have now determined from what you told me and also some further research that i have built my coil correctly (except for the soft plastic part) I have replaced the coke lid makeshift washers at each end of the coil with Neoprene washers with far more...- Shadowmonk710

How can I optimize my electromagnet for maximum lifting power?
A quick further comment, I just used the same bolt as mentioned in the post above and this time wound it 330 turns, in 3 layers of 110 turns each, and then connected it to a computer power supply of 12v @ 8.0 Amp, and it heated up instantly to an incredible heat and began melting the coke lids I...- Shadowmonk710

How can I optimize my electromagnet for maximum lifting power?
Hello everyone, I am writing with a strange problem. I have been attempting to make an electromagnetic coil that will have enough power to pick up say an average 9v battery in weight, the small kind found in the back of telly remotes and smoke alarms. I am using iron bolts 5cm long by...- Shadowmonk710

Electromagnets and switching polarity?
Thanx again Phrak Your knowledge is invaluable to me as I stumble through this vast field of electronics and magnetism. Yes it is very hard to see what I want done as I am deliberately holding back on a lot of the information about what this device will be used for, which makes it even harder...- Shadowmonk710

Electromagnets and switching polarity?
Thanx Phrak, You gave me a good angle to think from here. I also thought about a relay but with the relay being mounted at the circuit end as opposed to the coil end, which would be about a metre away from the circuit. There will definitely be a lot of research needed yet on how to sense...- Shadowmonk710

Electromagnets and switching polarity?
Thank you very much for the quick reply NoTime. I will go have a study of H-Bridges and see if this is what I need. And yes you are correct in assuming the are not made to spin, they may of course do so in use but only to a certain degree, they are not freely rotating on the wires. I will post...- Shadowmonk710

Electromagnets and switching polarity?
[SOLVED] Electromagnets and switching polarity? Hi people, I am relatively new to the forums and am experimenting with a new toy I want to try to make. I am stuck on the subject of changing polarity quickly in an electromagnetic coil and automatically. Let me explain. I have two rubber...- Shadowmonk710
