High School Why is There Space in the Universe?

Well, nobody knows for sure that space is empty. It might be as well maybe of some kind of "stuff". So in a sense everything might really be just a bunch of stuff with no empty space in between. But I guess it's more of a philosophical debate ;]

High School Problem Solving Physics students vs Non-science students

How about something like those puzzles in IQ tests. They usually don't require maths, only logic and mental gymnastics. Though I'm not sure if it will test their problem solving skills unless you ask them to write down their thought process. Also some logic problems might be useful.

Undergrad Playing with math keeps me sharp

Amazing ;] Sometimes I like to proove some theory or equation with as little maths as possible. As if going back in time and trying to "feel" how some equations were derived for the first time hundreds of years ago.

Find a solution to an equation with 2 variables

Yeah you need at least two equations in this case to find a single solution ;]

High School Can you trap light indefinitely?

Nice question ;] I've been wondering about this for a while too.

Undergrad Why does time slow down the faster you go?

Well for me personally the best way to "visualise" the answer to your question is to visualise a moving photon clock. Cheers.

Graduate Is There Mathematical Proof That Stars Are Still Being Formed?

Yeah it's a very interesting question ;] And a hard one indeed. It will be interesting to find out the answer.

High School What is the size of a black hole?

This thread got me thinking. Shouldn't an object, which has a mass have a volume (bigger than zero)?

High School What is the size of a black hole?

Back to this topic, black holes indeed have a zero volume in classical physics, however in quantum mechanics, they have a volume which is not 0. Here's some more about it: http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/ask_astro/answers/040527a.html

High School What is the size of a black hole?

I think it's not zero, more like so close to zero that it's negligible. Though I'm not sure about this.

Graduate Is Spacetime Real or Just an Idea?

Well, I guess the fact that bodies with mass bend space-time suggest that space-time isn't nothing. The same is with time, as we all know time moves slower for fast moving objects, so i guess time is not nothing, because it can be manipulated in such way. Though, it's only my opinion.

Graduate How Does 3D Distortion Affect the Space-Time Fabric?

Yeah that's a very good question. In my opinion, it will get distorted in the 4th dimension - time. As well all know from the general theory of relativity, times run slower for objects in a strong gravitational field compared to other objects that are not in such a field.

Undergrad Disorder: Is it really increasing?

Well yes your right. However, theoretically, in case of a big crunch both the state after BB and the end of the universe would look similar. And yeah I know big freeze is a more possible end of the universe.

Undergrad Disorder: Is it really increasing?

Well nobody is 100% sure, but maybe the laws of conservation of mass and energy suggest this.
