Galactic Time-Keeping: Creating a Universal Calendar

Here are two related problems I was thinking about and wonder if you can chime in (didn't see any related threads on these issues already): 1. Say there is a galactic "community" made-up of various species of sentient beings (humans being one of them). Say they have a central meeting place...

How Long for Earth to Feel Effects of Blowing Up Sun?

There were techno-magical reasons why I was thinking of a scenario in which they had to destroy the sun, but yes your points are very good and well taken.

Day length and orbital period + apparent luminosity

Thank you so much. So I can basically choose any day and year length I want? I.e. Day = 79344 seconds (equiv to 22.04 hours ... added the decimal to you know, make it seem more realistic). Then perhaps I can say a year = 262 days? Are these numbers ridiculous?

Creating lung compliance curves but I'm terrible at the math/graphing

I'm sorry, I think it should be attached now. Thanks for that first answer Mark. Now the other 2 curves should be in the attachment and I need a way to recreate them.

Creating lung compliance curves but I'm terrible at the math/graphing

Homework Statement I am trying to replicate the curves in the attachment, but since I am a physiologist it has been quite a while since I've done graphing. I am simply looking for an easy way to replicate these three curves. This is for a practice exam I am creating for first year medical...

PV Loops Program for Medical Students - USMLE Exam Compilation

Wow you are so helpful. You spent 5 minutes on my query, then decided instead of providing any info after your time investment to instead offer me a worthless suggestion. I'm looking for a program or a simple method of constructing many of these types of graphs. It isn't the math that is...

PV Loops Program for Medical Students - USMLE Exam Compilation

The numbers are arbitrary to be honest. I'm just not proficient enough at math to figure out how to get the characteristic shape of these things. Ideally I need to draw a few of them (the before graph, which looks the same in all of my examples and then the after graph - which would represent...

PV Loops Program for Medical Students - USMLE Exam Compilation

I am a medical student and I'm trying to find a good program that will allow me to draw PV loops like this: http://cvphysiology.com/Cardiac%20Function/CF025.htm I know in physics there also PV loops, so I thought someone might have a recommendation of a piece of software that would allow...

    Hiring astronomer for science fiction?

I'd like to hire an astronomer to help me with a writing project (fiction). Do you guys have any tips on how I can go about doing this? The work should be somewhat simple (I would think at least), it involves crafting a fictional galaxy and a few star systems therein. Sorry if this is the...

    New warning on common antibiotic

Sorry, I shouldn't assume everyone here is an MD or in the medical sciences in some capacity. Since you are not, I'll try to explain. It is well known that: Vancomycin = mostly bacteriostatic, poor/sloppy pharmacokinetics, toxic, poor tissue penetration. And oral vancomycin is through the roof...

    New warning on common antibiotic

I'm not sure what the deal is, really. Is this something unique to ciprofloxacin or can all fluoroquinolones cause lasting peripheral neuropathy? Some of the diseases that were or are currently treated in last resort circumstances are with fluroquinolones. They are damn good antibiotics, which...

Why in fever or increased temperature body's platelets are reduced?

Certain viral infections (i.e. arboviruses like Dengue) can result in pancytopenia. As to your question of why "platelets are reduced by not to that extent that it can cause internal bleeding or hemorrhage or petechiae" The first thing is to sort out definitions. Petechiae is a symptom caused...

What Will Happen if Universe Stops Expanding?

Very good replies. It's still over my head, but I asked it just because I wanted to understand a little bit more about the Big Crunch theory - and wondered if expansion had anything to do with it.
