I General physics question -- How can massless photons have momentum?

Thank you. It is the 'interaction' that interests & concerns me. So I will keep reading...

I General physics question -- How can massless photons have momentum?

👍 There is something called photon pressure. Massless photons that have momentum can impart or trade this momentum with particles that have mass...causing them to move. Does this trading mechanism have a name? Or how does something massless cause something with mass to move?

I General physics question -- How can massless photons have momentum?

P=mv *momentum equals mass X velocity. Light particles or "photons" are said to be "massless". And yet they have momentum. How is that possible? (p.s. I used to know the answer)

I Why do people keep saying photons are timeless?

Hmm...Light in a vacuum can move 'without' being hindered..it accomplishes it's task by getting to the other side of the medium in a set time..which would be it's velocity. I light wave traveling in a medium..is being hindered in it's travels..which means it will take 'longer' to accomplish the...

I Creating something from 'nothing' in our Universe

Hello..thanks for your answer. I am being a lit Hello..thanks for the reply. How do you un Italize this forum text? If I have the time I might pursue this line of questioning. I am thinking at the very start of the Universe. This extreme temp & density exists after the Universe's birth. Or I...

I Creating something from 'nothing' in our Universe

Hello. I have heard a question that asks..how can the Universe be created from nothing? Would not the answer to that question be understanding what that nothing is? Humans have an idealized notion of what nothing is..which can be far from the 'nothing' that existed at the beginning of the...

Inertia: What Causes Resistance to Motion Change?

Hello. Inertia is the resistance a material object has to a change in it's present motion because of an applied force..or even if an object is initially motionless. Why does matter have this quality? In the vacuum of outer space should it require virtually no energy to impart momentum to...

I/OFF-TOPIC FORUM: "Railing" Against the System

Hello. I would like to know where I can find a forum where I can for example "rail..against the system" or basically about potentially "off topic" stuff. Could be also science related though. Thanks SC

Where did Schwarzschild get his information for his black hole model?

Hello. Just a small point. I saw a time-lapse video once (ie. about 10 years duration) showing the 'literal orbital movements' of stars at the center of our galaxy. Stars were seen to speed up and slow down with a focal point that was clearly dark. Very convincing about there being a black hole...

Where did Schwarzschild get his information for his black hole model?

Hello. Sorry about any delay's but I am busy. Not a great response..but I am continuing. I can not see at the moment how a 'finite' sized horizon could be 'moving' out at the speed of light?...I understand the rest of it. My thinking has been that a material object does not have to be traveling...

Where did Schwarzschild get his information for his black hole model?

Hello. To continue in this thread..Question: does a material object approaching a black hole increase it's velocity towards it? I am assuming it will get closer and closer to the speed of light. No mass can reach the speed of light..but black holes can get more massive by pulling in material. My...

Where did Schwarzschild get his information for his black hole model?

Hello. Thank you. At the bottom I think you meant observer 1. That's okay. Now I will have to think about this a bit. Bye SC
