Admissions Admissions Q: MS in Statistics @ OSU
I am not familiar with that school, however there is more than one way to skin a cat. there tends to be a lot less "financial aid" for grad schools then for undergrad schools. For most people, the best way to get cash for grad school is by doing research and being a TA. If you already have some...- SpaceCowboy57

I know getting two Ph.Ds is ridiculous, but does it help?
One aspect that is important is that most company policies require them to pay a set amount per degree, based on the degree. with 2 Phd's a company will have to offer additional compensation. They may not need both degrees, in which case they certainly will not pay for the extra degree. My...- SpaceCowboy57

Schools Maximizing College Time: Majoring in Physics/Astronomy in 5 Years
It shouldn't hurt your chances. the advisor who determines whether or not they want to take you into their graduate program will probably be thrilled that you are passionate enough to put forth the extra effort for a second degree. It may however, hurt you wallet. My school has a couple of...- SpaceCowboy57

Schools Does a bad start to university hurt grad school chances?
Many schools (especially in the sciences and engineering) purposely try to cull the herd by making their courses difficult for newcomers used to high school level work. Many people do poorly their first year and manage to pull themselves together and succeed. if you get a degree from the...- SpaceCowboy57

My gpa is currently 2.57. Can i attain 3.9 gpa if i only have 2 years left?
Many people have already answered and criticized your original question so i will spare you the repitition. I do however have a better question for you. what will you say when the admissions troll asks you "why would i accept a student who let's their grades slide only to desperately try to...- SpaceCowboy57

How much money do Physicists make?
90K is pretty good pay. keep in mind that doctors pay obscene ammounts for insurance purposes. Not to metion it takes many years of some of the most expensive schooling you can get. As a physicist you can also have a backup job as a professor. Most professors in science-engineering departments...- SpaceCowboy57

Physics Junior in High School seeking guidance for future career in Physics
Many schools aren't too picky. For most engineering or science based degrees, it doesn't matter if you graduate from MIT, just that you go to a school that is at least reputable in your field of interest. For engineering or physics, most colleges will only really look at your math SAT section...- SpaceCowboy57

High School Ridiculous falling out of an airplane scenario
The most crucial factor is what you land on. even without the makeshift parachute, it would be possible to fall as slowly as 100mph. I would imagine that your macgayver style parachute could at least cut that in half. at only 50mph your chances look a lot better, however it's still about how you...- SpaceCowboy57

Undergrad Disagreement: Who is Right About Rolling Wheel Forces?
there is a force of rolling friction at the point instantaneously touching the ground. if it weren't for the fact that this force is applied tangetial to the wheel, the wheel wouldn't roll at all, it would just slide. The forces can still be added in the x direction (the force at the hub minus...- SpaceCowboy57

Undergrad What is the derivation for a non-linear spring and its effects on deflection?
A member that behaves as a nonlinear spring would have a stiffness that varies with x. The formula relating force to displacement is pretty much the same: F=k(x)x. you will of course need to know how k varies with x.- SpaceCowboy57
