Physics Is a B.S. in Physics a Dead-End for Employment?
I think you may be taking about a post of mine https://www.physicsforums.com/showpost.php?p=1583198&postcount=57 While my original job hunt was over 25 years ago, it was in tail end of the 2nd worst economy the US has had sine the 1930s, so while the some of the specifics are dated I still...- sx70

How Can I Improve My Study Habits After Failing Calculus 2?
What this suggests to me is a change in test taking strategy...you spent so much time getting the big question right you ran out of time for the shorter problems. If you completely skipped the 15 point problem do you think you could have gotten all or most of the remaining 85 points? Sometimes...- sx70

Struggling in Mathematical Physics: Should I Quit? Advice and Insights
I have had a bit of the same experience as DukeofDuke. My feeling was that I could and did teach myself history and lit types of things, but there was no way I was going to teach myself physics, which I also found difficult. Therefore I majored in physics in order to really learn it at the...- sx70

Schools Returning to Grad School after time off
Don't worry about it. I had 20+ years off between undergrad and graduate school. I did ease back in by taking only one class at first. In any case a mathematical methods class, a classical mechanics class and a grad EM class and/or a TA ship are plenty of work all on their own - you don't...- sx70

Programs Is it too late for a physics degree?
A masters would be enough if you work in an area of applied physics (some condensed matter, medical, photonics) and want an industrial research position. Some applied masters programs can be done almost entirely online. The real trick as you point out is getting the upper division physics...- sx70

Schools Graduate studies in University of Florida
The University of Wisconsin - Madison isn't in the top 20?? I suspect their ranking methodology is flawed. Unless perhaps they don't feel it's fair to rank professionals with amatuers.- sx70

Programs Is a grad degree via on-line and part-time possible?
University of Southern California offers a online MS in various engineering fields Michigan State offers an online masters in beam physics University of Arizona offers a (mostly) online MS in optical sciences - some lab requirements Arizona, Arizona State and Northern Arizona offer a ME...- sx70

Maximizing My Transfer for Top Grad Schools: Consider These Factors
I graduated from UIUC - twenty five years ago (OMG!) so my first hand impressions are very dated, but it is still highly rated as a grad school (#1 for condensed matter, in the top ten overall). It is a very large department - no problems with advanced undergrad classes being canceled for low...- sx70

Solving Fabry-Perot Problem: Increase L by \lambda/2 to Scan FSR
Try looking for for the phrase free spectral range. Then look for a graph of the transmission through a Fabry Perot etalon, can you tell me how to draw the FSR on this graph?- sx70

I used the equation n1sinθ1 = n2sinθ2 and plugged in the values.
73.8 degrees? Not yet. I was only looking for the angle inside the prism, then we were going to go thru and refract again at the second surface. You really need to show your work so I know what you're thinking - that's the way you get partial credit.- sx70

Solving Fabry-Perot Problem: Increase L by \lambda/2 to Scan FSR
I've started guiding you through the solution of your other posted problem. This attempt is really lame. Start by looking in your book and telling me what the FSR is.- sx70

I used the equation n1sinθ1 = n2sinθ2 and plugged in the values.
This isn't a coherence question (or advanced physics) but here goes - You haven't shown any of your work, so let's break this down and go from the beginning - you should know that the beam of light bends as it passes through the first surface of the prism - you should know of a law that...- sx70

Help! My Grades are Going Down in University
1) You say you are losing motivation - this will kill your ambitions quicker than anything else. If you really want what knowledge your degree program offers you must shake off the negative feedback of your grades and summon up the grit to do the hard work required. In my own case I got a D in...- sx70
