Medical Long term evaluation of ADD treatment
Quite the opposite, actually. As any psychologist or psychiatrist will tell you, the best results are always obtained by using a combination of drugs and therapy. However, therapy alone has been shown to have better long term results than medication alone. So if you had to choose, I'd opt for...- Thermodave

Medical Does Eating Fruit Make You Fat? | Harper's Illustrated Biochemistry
Find one person in the United States that became obese by eating too many natural fruits. Honestly, there are bigger fish to fry: sedentary lifestyles and junk food. By the way, BMI is a pretty decent indicator for people who aren't body builders. Most people, even most athletic people, do...- Thermodave

Graduate Electric field boundary equation implication at air/earth interface
I've been reading up on methods of generating plasma via electrical discharges and I have some question. I'm learning this on my own here so please correct any faulty asumptions. It appears to me that a typical RF discharge across a dielectric cell operates below breakdown voltage and the...- Thermodave

Graduate Exploring Shape Resonance in Air: Oxygen and Nitrogen
Yes, I guess it's very logical that this would fall into the excitation spectrum now that you mention it. I'll take a look at the Schulz article you linked and maybe I'll get a better understanding of this. Before posting this I was assuming that such a region (resonance) in the spectrum only...- Thermodave

Graduate Exploring Shape Resonance in Air: Oxygen and Nitrogen
Thank you for the response. An example of what I'm speaking of can be found in Phys. Rev A v56 n.2 (1997) by Sweeney & Shyn. If you don't have access to this journal just message me your email and I can send you a copy. To summarize, the authors are discussing a known shape resonance of the...- Thermodave

Graduate Exploring Shape Resonance in Air: Oxygen and Nitrogen
Greetings. I've been reading papers on plasma kinetics and have come across the term "shape resonance" a few times when describing peaks in electron impact cross section (function of energy). I have seen calculations attempting to explain these for atoms like helium but I'm not sure how close...- Thermodave

Finding 1-forms on Plane Vectors using dx1 and x2
Ok, so I'm pretty sure I'm not supposed to put dx in terms of dv1 since I have three vectors and it's only a 2D plane. So what does it mean to calculate the 1-form "on" a vector? Each vector obviously has a component in x1 and x2.- Thermodave

Finding 1-forms on Plane Vectors using dx1 and x2
Homework Statement Given three vectors on a plane (x1,x2) with coefficients a and b: v1 = a1*x1 + b1*x2 v2 = a2*x1 + b2*x2 v3 = a3*x1 + b2*x2 (presumably not used in this part) Find the 1-forms (below) on the vectors. Homework Equations The given 1-forms are: w1 = dx1 w2 =...- Thermodave

How much nuclear fuel is in a nuclear sub?
I think you're being a little silly. I've worked within the NNPP and I've never heard of such a thing. When I was in grad school my professor used to give us projects like what you describe. It's not illegal to do a paper design for a sub reactor.- Thermodave

Graduate Frequency Doubling: Typical Conversion, Input Power & CW Laser?
Thank you for the explanation. I wasn't thinking a specific experiment though. I've just noticed that there are a lot of diode lasers (e.g. New Focus 25mW cw) models on the market now with narrow linewidths that can be used for absorption experiments but that they are all in the red. If there...- Thermodave

Graduate Frequency Doubling: Typical Conversion, Input Power & CW Laser?
I'm trying to get an idea of how efficient frequency doubling methods are. I quick google search gives back everything from .01% to above 50%. What is the typical conversion from 1064 to 532? Is this common for other wavelengths/crystals? More importantly, why does it sound like the...- Thermodave

Undergrad Obscure Magnetic effects on copper wire
All of these microscopic processes are related. Thermodynamic properties such as temperature and pressure affect the movement of atoms and the electrons of the copper, so doing work on one end would push the piece out of equilibrium and cause electrons to move, yes? We do use magnets to drive...- Thermodave

Graduate Maximizing Entropy vs Minimizing Gibbs Function - Why?
It occurs to me that some people create codes to maximize the entropy of a system in order to predict equilibrium concentrations. However, others minimize the Gibbs function. I understand the relationship, so why the two methods? Aren't these results always the same? Is there a practical reason...- Thermodave

Solar lighting/power idea - viable?
You system is pretty complicated if you are talking about a single home installation. This would likely cost many millions of dollars, have poor efficiency, and only be able to produce a decent amount of light on bright, sunny days. I wonder, how deep attack nuclear sub can dive?
Let me just add that any interesting performance specs for military subs are going to be classified, so it's a waste of time to ask for them. Most of the people on here won't know and those that do are not allowed to say. You might as well say, "Hey, I'm looking for classified info. Can anyone...- Thermodave
