Material Selection, material indexes
Hi, I'm working in a design team for the first time and I'm in charge of choosing a material for an application. I have the constraints, support a tensile load of 50 kg , and the objective which is minimize the weight. I'm using the concept of material indexes to find the best material for the...- Thom_Silva

Undergrad Water Well Pressure - Is it Possible to Drain Entirely?
So, on a oil well where there are bursts of oil that last for a long time, should we a expect to see a change in the altitude of that land- Thom_Silva

Undergrad Water Well Pressure - Is it Possible to Drain Entirely?
I've thought of that and that is where my doubts come from. Imagine that instead of water we have oil. When the hole is opened and if the Earth is supported by the oil then we expect the Earth to fall until the chamber is totally empty.. But if the Earth is supported only partially by the oil...- Thom_Silva

Undergrad Water Well Pressure - Is it Possible to Drain Entirely?
So, are you saying that no water would spill ?- Thom_Silva

Undergrad Water Well Pressure - Is it Possible to Drain Entirely?
Yes if it was a chamber where no air or gases could enter from the bottom. The only entrance would be the hole on the top- Thom_Silva

Undergrad Water Well Pressure - Is it Possible to Drain Entirely?
So as the water rises is there a vacuum on the bottom ?what happens to the bottom of the well, if no more water is coming in ?- Thom_Silva

Undergrad Water Well Pressure - Is it Possible to Drain Entirely?
I'm not interested in how they do it in reality. With this conditions, how would things play out if they opened the hole?- Thom_Silva

Undergrad Water Well Pressure - Is it Possible to Drain Entirely?
Imagine there is a water well underground. The pressure at the surface of the water will be the atmospheric pressure+ the pressure due to the weight of the rock. If i drill a hole i assume the pressure differential will push the water up the hole. Is the mass of water displaced equal to the...- Thom_Silva

Undergrad Energy & Power: Calculating Force & Choosing Engines
Yes, i got that. My problem is that i have a electric engine but i only have the power outputs. I will attach it to propellers, how can i know the amount of thrust the engine will provide ? I guess i'll do this by trial an error xD- Thom_Silva

What you are explaining me leads me to the concept of thrust. Is there any relation between thrust and power?- Thom_Silva

Undergrad Energy & Power: Calculating Force & Choosing Engines
Hi, Imagine this situation: I'm pushing against a wall, and i obviously making a force. The wall doesn't move, so no work is being done, nevertheless i wasted energy. Is there way to calculate how much energy was spent assuming that we know the force being applied to the wall. Another...- Thom_Silva

Undergrad Sound source moving at the speed of sound
If i travel at the speed of sound and i say a word, the sound of that word will travel alongside me. If a minute later i say another word, now i have the sound of word 1 and 2 traveling with me. I presume that if i pass someone in the way, he will hear both words as i pass by. What am i seeing...- Thom_Silva

Undergrad Sound source moving at the speed of sound
Hi, Suppose that a plane that is traveling at the speed of sound has a loudspeaker attached to it. Along the he trip the loudspeaker releases specific sounds. What does the pilot ear when the first sound is released? And after the second sound is released, does he ear both sounds at the same...- Thom_Silva
