COVID Reaction to COVID-19 Vaccine (or what to be prepared for)
Six in my immediate family have received both doses. Small sample size but this is an anecdotal thread. Two were bedridden the day after, too dizzy feverish to get around comfortably. One had an uncomfortable day but nothing incapacitating. The other three were fine, minor symptoms with...- Torbert

Automatic Tire Chains - Onspot's Efficient Idea
I live in Fairbanks, Alaska where the side roads remain iced up the entire winter My children rode a bus to school for the twelve years they attended school. The buses were, and still are, equipped with the automatic chains to navigate the hilly residential areas. The chains are self cleaning...- Torbert

What are the different types of memory used for data entry?
Some things are not questioned due to them being universal. When I retell a story it comes out sometimes at complete odds to what is there if I pull up the memory of the page and reread it. I can catch incorrect memories only if the effort is made. Mostly I pull up instructions or...- Torbert

Giving a jump start to a car - how does the circuit become complete?
I've only had one battery blow up on me, back when young and inexperienced. As the new guy in the shop I had the job of starting the dead cars. Alaska in the 1960's had lots of vehicles with dead batteries towed to the shop. Restarts involved a 100 amp charger, hooking it up, turning it on...- Torbert

Is it Rational to Skip Health Insurance if You're Young and Healthy?
It would be 'profitable' for just about everyone to skip insurance. The system is dependent on the majority of clients not using the service. The ability to pay for catastrophic medical bills is entirely funded by the premiums paid by the healthy. I always had insurance that I have been lucky...- Torbert

Do plants respond to low frequency electromagnetic waves?
I grew 'Dwarf Danish Flag' bread seed poppies indoors under controlled conditions for three years. Four plants at a time, two growing through 8" ring magnets, pull force 105#, and two growing without magnets. Six generations later the records were compared and the results showed fruit weight...- Torbert

Question: What % of white Americans have colonial roots?
My mom did family tree research back to a bastard son of Henry II. America reached in 1630. Oklahoma by 1840. Alaska in 1908. One fought in the american revolution, 'Return Jonathan' was born while his father was off to war. In Oklahoma a great grandmother had a partial native american as a...- Torbert

Appliances How to modify a rotary pencil sharpener to sharpen off-center leads?
Once the cone is established by the initial sharpening the subsequent sharpening is self centering. Turning the pencil during the first time in may help. The pencil lead/wood assembly is done by machine and is centered pretty well. The sharpener is usually set for multiple sizes of pencil and...- Torbert

USB powerbank with pure 5V output
For temporary (3 hour) low power (.06 w) output I used lithium ion (3.7v) in series with an alkaline (1.5v) battery for a five volt application. No recharging, or high power draw. I could have used a nickel hydroxide (1.2v) rechargeable but needed the full five volts. Mix and match is a very...- Torbert

Is Lowering School Starting Age To 3 A Good Idea
I began at 4 in a semi rigorous church school (1956) and the curriculum was geared to the appropriate age. The group of 17 all went to the same public school until 9 when a new school was built, splitting us up. Up until the third grade we were fairly average, no actual failures but that may...- Torbert

Why does a piston-powered wheel keep turning in one direction?
A two stroke diesel will run whichever way it is spun to start it. The force on the piston cares not whether the crankshaft throw is to the left or right. Scale model airplane engines often run backwards when started by hand.- Torbert
