Physics Benefits of Finishing Physics Degree for High School Teaching

and i have taken a lot of other science courses so i could teach any science they gave me basically, although my cert would be in physics. i definitely feel confident enough to teach any high school science. the question is will they give me the chance to show that w/o the full physics major -...

Physics Benefits of Finishing Physics Degree for High School Teaching

I'm in NYC btw, if that helps. my question is why would they have an alt cert route if it wasn't viable? a piece of paper doesn't necessarily mean you know the physics well, and you can know physics well without the paper.

Physics Benefits of Finishing Physics Degree for High School Teaching

the thing is that physics is not as commonly taken so its needed by less students but there are also less physics teachers. the easy sciences are taken by more students but everyone and their grandmother is getting certified in biology at my school - the physical sciences seem to have a...

Physics Benefits of Finishing Physics Degree for High School Teaching

No - in my state you only need 30 credits if you already have a bachelor's degree. And it's a major state.

Physics Benefits of Finishing Physics Degree for High School Teaching

i'm currently 27 and still living at home. i'd like to start a career as soon as possible. it is extremely stressful living at home. after this spring term i will have the 30 credits i need to get state certified for teaching physics. does it pay to complete the physics degree in any way? i...

Looking for a Portable Astrophysics Book? Check Out the Nexus 7 32GB!

Hi - I recently bought an old edition of carroll ostlie real cheap and I'm not too motivated because the book is gigantic and unwieldy. anyone know of a good intro astrophysics book on that level but in a fun-size/portable? :D Thanks

Physics Astrophysics on par with physics? (perception-wise)

Hi all, earlier this year I asked about astronomy vs physics, and the general consensus was that, at least in the academic world, astronomy is thought of as fringe in the sense that you won't get hired to a physics post or be able to do physics research, but a physicist could do astronomy...

Doing great in upper level physics - but really what's the point?

oh ok those fields do sound interesting! the kind of tier you are referring to, one that is competitive in transferring out to industry - is a state school system or a city system? I'm at cuny - idk how good the grad program is at cuny but I'm inclined to think nay. but I'm just a pessimist...

Doing great in upper level physics - but really what's the point?

thanks zombie - hearing that is a huge relief. what kinds of applied physics areas are hot? does it wax and wane - or are the hot fields rather steady? This past term I found myself loving optics - i took a junior level optics course (although it was designed for students without griffith's...

Doing great in upper level physics - but really what's the point?

I feel like a PhD might have made sense if I had my stuff together and finished with the 1st bachelor's in physics at age 22 - but I'll be finished with my 2nd bachelor's in physics (1st in foreign language) at age 29. That's why I am strongly considering taking the 30 credits and running to...

Doing great in upper level physics - but really what's the point?

Thanks for replying BiP. How much undergrad content am I going to have to make up though? The two tracks are quite different from what I have read and heard. Even though those schools accept physics majors, surely they require some remedial coursework or at least some self-learning, no?

Doing great in upper level physics - but really what's the point?

Even though I'm doing really well in my upper level physics courses, I'm starting to get disillusioned with physics job opportunities, even for a PhD. From all that I'm reading, it seems the chance of getting a tenure track position is remarkably low, even for graduates from a top grad school...

An Introduction to Thermal Physics by Schroder - any thoughts

get another book to supplement it. there are no worked examples, and he leaves many crucial concepts for the problems, which your instructor may not assign.

Thermodynamics with statistical mechanics pedagogy question

I was wondering if it's common in undergraduate studies for statistical mechanics to be covered in the last 3-4 weeks of a thermodynamics course? I feel like the same is done for infinite series in a 2nd semester of calculus. Needless to say, both topics deserve much more time to fully do them...

Which grad school spec for fusion research

thanks clope. i was also wondering - does focusing on fusion research in grad school shoehorn you into academia only, since it's only in the R&D phase at the moment? Or do grad students in NE that specialize in fusion take enough fission coursework to be marketable in govt/industry with...
