Admissions Fall 2009 Graduate Admissions Thread

I also got into OSU. Are you going to the open house? Maybe I'll see you there.

Is Taking Both the Math and Physics GRE Worthwhile for a Math Physics Degree?

I second cristo. If you're pursuing Math Physics, you might impress the admissions board with good scores in both GRE's. But it's probably a better idea to take the time you would have spent on studying for the Math GRE and apply it to getting an even better score on the Physics GRE.

    Sleeping in computer labs/classes/?

I sleep on campus three nights a week. I don't have a car and live ~30 miles away from my university. Last semester I slept in my lab. I had a sleeping bag and a pillow, and I slept on the floor. I was able to get 6-8 hours of slightly restless sleep every night. Occasionally I would go to...

    Masters vs. Staying a 9th semester / 5th year

[slightly off topic] I read the http://books.google.com/books?id=-UhhI1X87VEC&pg=PA159&sig=N-k1Ez8Mt2WRb05hEXcOGfw0zwA&vq=%22the+order+of+H+divides+the+order+of+G.+The+number+of+cosets+of+H+in+G+is+called+the%22&source=gbs_quotes_s&cad=2#PPP1,M1" chapter on Google Books. It looks really...

    Masters vs. Staying a 9th semester / 5th year

The way I see it, there are three options: 1. You go to grad school now and accrue debt. In two years you'll have a masters degree and have ~40k in debt. 2. You wait a year. You nail your GRE. You publish a paper. You get great letters of recommendation. Your grad school app is much...

    Criminal record and academic career?

I've also been worried about this issue. I got a DUI last august. I spoke to my lawyer, and he said there was no way to get it taken off my record. I'm worried about it affecting my chances of getting into a good grad school. DUI is a misdemeanor, and (sadly) not extremely rare nowadays. I...

    Fighting a professor's decision?

The basic question is in my mind is: Did your friend have a good reason for believing he could miss the exam and make it up for full credit? So far, I haven't seen one. If he did, provide it and we'll be much more sympathetic. My next question would be: What did the professor say when...

    Modern Physics Textbook Suggestions

I thought this book was pretty average. Its explanations would leave you mostly satisfied, its derivations were mostly clear, etc. Throughout the semester this textbook was a continual reminder that I was taking a survey course in Modern Physics. Of course, Modern Physics is a huge subject...

Studying (Physics Textbooks) or (Physics Lectures)

You should decide that on a class-by-class basis. My E+M teacher lectured straight out of Griffith's, almost word for word and derivation by derivation. My attendance dropped to about 50% but I still did well. My Math Physics teacher used Boas, but covered all the material his own way and...

Calc 2: Is it Really That Much Harder Than Calc 1?

I agree with PowerIso. It seems harder because you cover a lot different topics. You go from integrating with the power rule and simple substitution in Calc I, to integrating exponential functions, inverse and hyperbolic trig functions, integration by parts, and trig substitution. You do...

Programs Good 2008 Physics Phd and M.S. Applicant Resource

Looked strange at first to me too. I think the deal with this site is that you sign up and record your progress in applying (I applied here, I got accepted there). These are the acceptance rates for members of the site. I guess that means just registering boosts your chances of getting accepted.

Schools Yet another grad school question thread

What makes a good letter of recommendation? Is it the professor's glowing review of your achievement? It seems that any professor you've got a good relationship with would give you the best review he possibly could, even if you're not the best student he's ever had. Is it the reputation...

Do I Wanna Do Physics? - My Thoughts

What level are you taking in both? I was having the same debate at the end of my sophomore year, mostly because I had had 4 math classes (Calc I-III and ODE) vs 2 physics classes (Phys I and II). The next year I took some upper-div classes in both math and physics, and since they were both...
