Can someone explain peierls distortion/transition to me?

im still fairly confused... is there a simple derivation somewhere i can follow? i tried looking one up but i can't seem to find anything consistent...

Can someone explain peierls distortion/transition to me?

Peierls distortion states that for a 1 dimensional polymer (like polyacyteline) with lattice spacing a they should have a half-filled conduction band, why? And how does changing the lattice space to 2a cause it to form an energy gap? In my mind it should be the same as the first case...

What Are Creative Physics or Computer Science Usernames Incorporating Sil?

I have been wanting to think of a good username for a while now that i can use for gamig, social stuff, forums, etc. I want it to be physics related and/or computer science related and have (at very least the "Sil" part) my last name (Silman). I don't want it to be over the top or include...

Finding area of integration in polar?

Homework Statement Im having trouble find the area of integration for this integral which i have to convert to polar: \int_0^2 \int_0^\sqrt{1-(x-1)^2} \frac{x+y}{x^2 + y^2} dydx Homework Equations x = rcosθ y = rsinθ r = x^2 + y^2 The Attempt at a Solution i know exactly what to do to the...

    Choose Your Physics-Inspired DJ Name!

All great suggestions, I think I am leaning towards Boseman or Spinor. Or following the spinor track, just be named Dirac Spinor as a pseudonym. But any and all suggestions are still greatly appreciated! The party won't be for a couple weeks.

    Choose Your Physics-Inspired DJ Name!

Hey all, so i just got into using Traktor Pro 2 and a VCI-100 to do live mixes of songs, and i want to host a party. I am going to have an LCD TV displaying an animation behind me and I want it to display my "DJ Name." Only problem is I have no idea what I want my "DJ name" to be, i want it...

Velocity addition formula for multiple velocities within each other

i got that much, but I am trying to find a formula that will tell me the velocity of any nth cart, so i need something empirical instead of recursive.

Velocity addition formula for multiple velocities within each other

I am having a problem coming up with an empirical formula for multiple objects moving with the same speed relative to each one up. I.e. there is a cart moving with speed u relative to me, and inside it is a cart moving speed u relative to the cart is inside it. and inside that cart is a cart...

Questions about photons. Their interaction with time and their life-cycle.

Do photons experience time? If they move at the speed of light then special relativity states that they do not, but then does that mean they do not move forward in time which means the distance they travel is instantaneous (thus it is infinitely fast), which we know is not true (as they move at...

What is the concentration of bromide present in a 0.659 M. solution of CaBr2

Homework Statement The arsenic in a 1.42 g sample of pesticide was converted to AsO43- by suitable chemical treatment. It was then titrated using Ag+ to form Ag3AsO4 as a precipitate. If it took 33.7 mL of 0.113 M Ag+ to reach the equivalence point in this titration, what is the mass...

Schools Good College for Physics: Advice for Low GPA Student

Hey, I am sure you guys get this thread all the time but i need some person specific advice. You see, i don't have the best grades, and i don't have all that much extra curriculars, I am not a star student and i don't really stand out. But i have an amazing passion for physics. Two teachers...

How to find the equation for an equation from a hyperbolic graph

Okay, so how exactly could i form an equation for hyperbolic cosine using data that i collect? Secondly, i don't understand how the a value over 2 in the front of the equation and the a value under the x and -x can be the same. In this equation don't you need those two variables to be different...
