High School Why does the air we breath float on Earth?
Air does sink to the ground. Put your head near the ground and breathe in - it still works down there! Think of a swimming pool. Down at the bottom there's some water, and at the top there's water too. The water at the top of the pool isn't "floating", there's just not enough room for it all...- Vladimirr

Graduate Will water or lava freeze in space, or would it be a gas?
Depends where in space, right? Think of comets as they come in from the Oort cloud. They're chunks of rock and frozen water. As they float in towards the Sun, the water and other chemicals begin to heat up and outgas, creating a tail.- Vladimirr

Daily Temperature as a function of time
A sine wave is a good rough approximation, but if you're looking for something more accurate, then you have to take other factors into account than time and min/max temperature. Here's a graphical hourly forecast for Melbourne, Florida, near their weather forecast office. Any NWS site should...- Vladimirr

High School Why is Air Invisible to the Naked Eye?
Technically it's not invisible, it's just very close to transparent. If you look up at the sky in the daytime, you don't see stars, you see blue. This is due to Rayleigh scattering. But as to the question of "why can't I see air molecules floating around the room" - it's because the...- Vladimirr

Which CPU is Better for Gaming and CAD Software: Intel or AMD?
The 2500k is virtually the same as the 2600k for gaming. Save the money and put it into a $70 better video card.- Vladimirr

Which CPU is Better for Gaming and CAD Software: Intel or AMD?
I'm partial to ASUS boards. This is the one I got: Asus P8Z68 V-PRO Gen 3 You want to look at the expansion slots. Looking up your mobo selection on newegg, it says: PCI Express 3.0 x16 - 2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 - 1 PCI Express x1 - 4 So yes, it will accommodate your video card...- Vladimirr

Which CPU is Better for Gaming and CAD Software: Intel or AMD?
I'm a big fan of the i5-2500k. I assume since it's the "k" variant, you'll be overclocking it? What motherboard(s) are you looking at? Tom's Hardware has excellent forums on which you can post theoretical systems, and some very knowledgeable folks will give you an honest review of your...- Vladimirr

Bizarre Oscillating Circles Above US
Case in point, the current situation around two radar sites in Oklahoma. The FDR radar site shows the a cloud of "precipitation" around it, but nothing in Oklahoma city. http://vladimirr.homestead.com/files/okcity.jpg The TLX radar site shows a cloud of "precipitation" around it, but...- Vladimirr

Bizarre Oscillating Circles Above US
Those circles are artifacts of the composite reflectivity radar product. In addition, the cloudy objects you show in later images are the result of the WSR-88D running in something called "clear air mode". I realize I'm late to the party on this one. I apologize if restate parts of what...- Vladimirr

High School What happens to the missing time?
Since the Earth is also revolving around the Sun (in addition to rotating), it needs to turn slightly more than one full rotation in order for the Sun to be in the same apparent position in the sky from day to day. This difference is approximately four minutes. (And of course, we account for...- Vladimirr

High School Witnessing a Sideways Half Moon: Michigan, USA
It's an issue of perception. Go outside, face east, and extend your arm straight out to the east. Point your thumb upwards. This is the direction the moon will follow when it rises. With your arm extended, and your thumb pointing straight out from your hand, bend your elbow and let your...- Vladimirr

High School How long does an explosion's boom last?
"Explosion" doesn't really give you enough parameters to be able to tell. Think about it - what's causing the sound? Is it due to something rapidly oxidizing/burning and vibrating against the air, like a firework? If so, how long does it burn? That's how long your sound is. Fast...- Vladimirr
