MPhys vs Bachelor's Degree - UK Education System
Hi there, I am currently in the 4th year of a physics MSci (Essentially the same as MPhys) so hopefully I can help. In my experience MSci/MPhys are equally well received in PhD applications as an MSc in the uk. The minimum requirement by research councils in the uk is 2.1 BSc. The only trouble...- wolfmax

Schools Should I Stay or Should I Go? The Pros and Cons of Living at Home for University
Hi there, I'm going into the fourth year of a physics MSci program in London, and I have lived at home the entire time. I do not feel I have missed out whatsoever. With travel links being so easy in London there is no reason to miss out. I have roughly the same commute time as you as do most...- wolfmax

Hard Interview Questions: STEM Fields for Monte
With the bike it would be harder to steer due to larger angular momentum. It would also be harder to pedal. With the hydrogen car one it was more a test of your estimation skills. The answer is not important, it's to let the interviewer see how you try to figure something out and if you have a...- wolfmax

Hard Interview Questions: STEM Fields for Monte
Questions I've been asked: 1) How do mobile phone calls work? What can effect them? 2) If bikes had all there weight distributed on the circumference of the wheel what would happen? 3) If all cars in the world switched to hydrogen power, would the water produced raise sea levels significantly...- wolfmax

How do UK levels compare to the EU levels I know ?
Graduating without honours is a pass/fail degree awarded at the discretion of the university. This is, I would have thought, is seen as worse than graduating with a third class honours degree. Most degrees in science in uk are honours degrees- wolfmax

How do UK levels compare to the EU levels I know ?
Honours just means that you have passed all modules and you get a classified degree i.e. 1st (>70%), 2.1(60%-69%), 2.2 (50%-59%), 3rd (40%-49%). If you fail some of the required elements of the honours degree, the university can award you an 'ordinary' degree, which doesn't have a...- wolfmax

How do UK levels compare to the EU levels I know ?
The UCL astronomy certificate does look like a interest qualification. Whereas the one at birkbeck is preparation for BSc Physics. Also lots of universities have a foundation year for those with no maths or physics background. After a quick search it looks like UCL has got rid of its evening...- wolfmax

How do UK levels compare to the EU levels I know ?
Hi there! First of all A Levels are what we in UK take before going to university to do a bachelors. However, if you feel like you need some preparation before taking university physics I would recommend doing a certificate of higher education at somewhere like Birkbeck in London. Birkbeck...- wolfmax

Can you get into archeology after studying applied physics?
I've read a couple of papers on cosmic ray muon tomography and how it can be used to map tunnels and secret chambers in pyramids. Sounded pretty cool. Also one of my lecturers once said you could go into material analysis after a BSc provided you get the necessary lab experience.- wolfmax

Finished PhD -- it's been one year and can't find a job
I think it is. I had an informal conversation with some lecturers at my uni and they all seem to favour foreign students. "They work harder" is what they say. From what I've seen I'd probably agree. We just want an easy life.- wolfmax

Finished PhD -- it's been one year and can't find a job
I can back up what Lavabug is saying. PhD is not necessarily the goal with physics undergrads in the UK, as it seems to be in other countries. In fact I've had many conversations with international students who marvel in us Brits lack of academic fervour. To the OP, if you've found something...- wolfmax

Schools Undergrad university course advice
Don't put too much emphasis on league tables. An ~25 uni is still a good uni and a good degree from there will still give you good job opportunities. For example my first bash at uni I concentrated on league tables and ended up at imperial studying Chem Eng which was a year of hell. I realized...- wolfmax

Schools Astrophysics university course - advice
Hi Paolo, I am a third year physics undergrad in the UK. First of all you won't be disadvantaged studying in italy. Practically 25% of the PhD students in my department are Italian. I think the main motivation for them to move is funding. So don't worry if you want to stay in italy. There seem...- wolfmax

Programs How Difficult is it to get PhD in physics
We have obviously had different experiences. In my year I would say 25% want to do a PhD, 25% just did physics as route into finance and 50% don't know what they want to do. This may change now with the trebling of tuition fees, so new students want a set career plan before starting uni. I...- wolfmax
