Calculate Tension on Rope for Boat in Wind Up to 3000 lbs

Homework Statement My boat is tethered to a rope that can withstand a maximum of 8000 pounds of tension. The wind will exert, at maximum, 3000 pounds of force on the boat. How do I calculate the tension on the rope based on the angles that the rope is at? does it make a difference if the...

Tension on a rope - not a homework question

My boat is tethered to a rope that can withstand a maximum of 8000 pounds of tension. The wind will exert, at maximum, 3000 pounds of force on the boat. How do I calculate the tension on the rope based on the angles that the rope is at? does it make a difference if the boat is stationary, or if...

Expanding gas - is any work done?

Homework Statement I can't figure this out...if you have a gas in a rigid container, with a membrane separating the gas from a vacuum in the other half of the container, then remove the membrane and allow the gas to expand, is any work done? It's not expanding against force - does that make...

    Compression of an ideal gas

Homework Statement An ideal gas, Cp = (5/2)R, Cv = (3/2)R, is changed from P1 = 1 Bar and V1t = 12m^3 and V2t = 1m^3 by the following mechanically reversible processes: a) Isothermal compression b) Adiabatic compression followed by cooling at constant temperature c) Adiabatic compression...

    Thermodynamics, enthelpy change for steam

So I solved it assuming adiabatic (Q=0) and assuming the kinetic energy term is negligible. But out of curiosity, how would I solve this problem if it WASN'T adiabatic? What if the turbine was transferring heat?

    Thermodynamics, enthelpy change for steam

But then what does the temperature change have to do with it? How can Q equal 0 when there's a temperature change? I don't have to use the temperatures in my calculations at all because Q=0?

    Thermodynamics, enthelpy change for steam

Homework Statement Steam at 200psia and 600 *F [state 1] Enters a turbine through a 3-inch-diameter pipe with a velocity of 10(ft)/(s). The exhaust from the turbine is carried through a 10-inch-diameter pipe and is at 5psia and 200 *F [state 2]. What is the power output of the turbine? H1 =...

Fluid Mechanics shear stress, conceptual question

I still don't understand! Does shear stress change across the gap between the plates then, or not?

Fluid Mechanics shear stress, conceptual question

Homework Statement Consider a fluid between two plates. One on the bottom which is stationary, and one at the top which is moving at constant velocity V. The plates are separated by distance h. Does shear stress change as you move further from the moving plate? Homework Equations the...
