What education and work do you need to become a professor or doctor?

I've always wondered how one achieves the title of a prof/Dr in any field. Is there any difference in these titles and the work the individuals holding them do? what level of education is required? Anyone who knows, pls help. Thanks in advance.

Meaning of professor depends on the country. Dr usually means someone holding PhD degree, and these are much more standardized throughout the world (comparable course load and requirements).
