SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the decision-making process between pursuing a degree in engineering versus physics. The student expresses a strong preference for physics despite parental concerns regarding job prospects and graduate school admission. The conversation highlights the importance of personal passion in academic choices while acknowledging the potential career limitations of a Bachelor of Science in Physics. The student seeks validation for a resource on college degrees and salary expectations, specifically questioning the necessity of a Ph.D. for a successful career in physics.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of academic degree structures, particularly in STEM fields.
  • Familiarity with career pathways associated with engineering and physics degrees.
  • Knowledge of graduate school admission processes and requirements.
  • Basic comprehension of salary expectations in various fields, particularly in science and engineering.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the job market for physics graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree.
  • Explore graduate school requirements for physics and engineering programs.
  • Investigate the potential career paths available for physics majors in industry.
  • Evaluate trustworthy resources for salary data and employment statistics in STEM fields.
USEFUL FOR

so I had a talk with my parents about applying to university. My parents are thinking of engineering and I am thinking of physics. Obviously my parents are concerned about job prospects of pure science degrees, also worried sick that I might not get in grad school. On the other hand, I am kinda like "My life, I want it my way and do what I like," which is bad, but what the heck. Also I am kinda overly confident that I will do well and get into good grad school and good job (i am not thinking of teaching...but I want to do some research and get into industry).

any advice?

oh and is this link dependable? Like can I trust it? I am not sure if it's true, or one of the advertising websites

If it is trustable, i guess majoring in physics is not all bad. Or do I need a phd for that salary

People with a B.S. in Physics are employable. You won't be doing physics with only a bachelor's, though.
