How Many Intersection Points Can Two Circles Have?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

Two circles, C1 and C2, can have a maximum of two points of intersection in a plane. The scenarios include zero intersection points when the circles are separate, one intersection point when they are tangent, and two intersection points when they intersect at two distinct locations. The discussion clarifies that four intersection points are not possible for two circles.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic geometry concepts
  • Familiarity with the properties of circles
  • Knowledge of intersection points in Euclidean space
  • Ability to visualize geometric figures
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the geometric properties of circles
  • Explore the concept of tangency in circles
  • Learn about intersection points in conic sections
  • Study the implications of circle intersections in coordinate geometry
USEFUL FOR

Students studying geometry, educators teaching mathematical concepts, and anyone interested in the properties of circles and their intersections.

Let C1 and C2 be circles in the plane. Describe the number of possible points of intersection of C1 and C2.

It is 4?

I don't think I can draw two circles with 4 points of intersection... can you?

Also there are multiple possbilities, there might be 0 for example (just draw one in London and one in Tokyo)
