Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around improving algebra skills for juniors, particularly in the context of Electrical Engineering courses. Participants explore various software and games that could aid in mastering tricky algebra problems and enhancing mental calculation abilities.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • Ray expresses a need for software or games to help with tricky algebra problems and improve mental calculation speed, citing specific examples of problems he struggles with.
  • One participant suggests using YouTube as a resource for learning algebra, mentioning a specific clip that appears helpful.
  • Another participant shares their experience tutoring algebra and recommends a specific website as a useful guide for refreshing algebra skills.
  • A different participant provides a link to another resource that they found helpful for algebra practice.
  • One participant questions the necessity of becoming proficient in mental algebra, suggesting that understanding the underlying theory is more important than training mental calculation skills to a high level, especially when computers can perform calculations more efficiently.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants present a variety of resources and perspectives on improving algebra skills, but there is no consensus on the importance of mental algebra proficiency versus understanding theoretical concepts.

Contextual Notes

Some participants may have different assumptions about the role of mental calculation in learning algebra, and the discussion does not resolve the varying opinions on the necessity of mental algebra skills.

Who May Find This Useful

Students in junior-level courses, particularly in STEM fields, educators looking for resources to assist students, and individuals interested in improving their algebra skills.

I'm a junior taking Electrical Engineering courses, so far I've done pretty well, but now I've noticed more and more classes are really testing my algebra skills. I thought I was pretty good, but I guess I thought wrong. I want to know if there is a software/game software that helps with tricky algebra problems and improves my mental calculation capabilities. I'm really slow when dealing with calculations in the head.

Example of tricky algebra: 2^3^5, ln(1), d/dx(lnx), ln(4)^3, etc. I don't really remember how to deal with these types of problems.

Links to sites, recommendations for algebra games/software would be great.

Thanks,

Ray

what about youtube? here's one of the first clips I found. I haven't watched the whole thing but it seems pretty good. there's all kinds of other stuff also:

I tutored algebra to middle and high school students last summer, and I used this website ( http://www.purplemath.com/modules/index.htm ) as a guide. I had also forgotten a bit but it wasn't too hard to pick back up.

This may be a stupid question, but is there some reason why you want to be good at mental algebra? I think it is extraordinarily important to understand the basic transformation rules and the workings behind the theory, but I don't see any reason to train something to high levels which a computer is better at anyway.
