SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the transferability of credits and the value of the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) Computer Science program. Participants note that UNLV is ABET accredited, which is a significant factor for many students. However, opinions vary on the importance of ABET accreditation in Computer Science, with some asserting that the quality of education is consistent across institutions. The local job market, particularly with casinos hiring CS majors, is also highlighted as a potential advantage for students considering UNLV.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of ABET accreditation and its implications for engineering and technology programs
  • Familiarity with the job market dynamics in the Las Vegas area, particularly in the gaming industry
  • Knowledge of the University of Arizona's Computer Science program and its ranking
  • Awareness of the general curriculum structure in Computer Science programs
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the job placement rates for Computer Science graduates from UNLV
  • Investigate the specific curriculum differences between UNLV and University of Arizona
  • Explore the impact of ABET accreditation on career opportunities in Computer Science
  • Look into networking opportunities available through UNLV's connections with local casinos
USEFUL FOR

Prospective transfer students, Computer Science majors evaluating program quality, and individuals interested in the job market for tech roles in Las Vegas.

I'm looking to transfer to University of Nevada Las Vegas. I've read that the local casinos snatch up CS majors like heroin brownies. Can anybody offer any other input to keep in mind?

I've checked and they're ABET accredited. I'm currently attending University of Arizona which was ranked in US and News Report as in the top 50 CS programs. Also, I've been told by a programmer I know (works for Amazon.com) that ABET accreditation isn't important for Computer Science.

Doesn't matter where you get your bachelors. It's going to be the same material in either place.
