Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the appropriateness of requesting a re-grade for an exam, particularly concerning the issue of partial credit for minor mistakes. Participants explore the implications of grading policies and personal feelings about advocating for oneself in an academic setting.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant describes their experience of receiving no partial credit despite having the correct setup, raising the question of whether it is reasonable to ask for a re-grade.
  • Another participant asserts that it is within the student's rights to request a re-grade and suggests that TAs may appreciate the vigilance of students in ensuring fair grading.
  • A third participant echoes the sentiment that questioning grades is acceptable, noting that it is better to address grading concerns promptly rather than waiting until the end of the term.
  • A final participant indicates their intention to approach the professor during office hours to discuss the grading issue.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that it is reasonable to ask for a re-grade, but there are differing feelings about how to approach the situation without appearing overly confrontational.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference specific grading policies outlined in syllabi, which may vary by instructor, and express personal concerns about the social dynamics of requesting grade changes.

Who May Find This Useful

The TAs grade our exams, and we're supposed to get partial credit if we use the correct set up but somewhere make a careless mistake, thus getting the wrong answer. I started with the right equations but left out a decimal about half-way through, and I got no partial credit. I also left off a negative sign in a different problem when calculating, but it was written in my work.

Would it be unreasonable to ask for a re-grade? The professor said in the syllabus that if we find any errors in the grading to tell him, so I'm thinking it is okay...I just don't want to come off as rude or one of those people who fights for every point. I feel especially awkward about asking since there are two errors, but it would raise my final grade about 5 points.

Uh, yes, you are well within your rights. Even the TA who did the grading will probably appreciate it. I grade, and it's the most tedious, thankless task. Vigilance on the part of the students keeps you honest.

Note: As you state, the professor already said it's okay to question the grade a bit... and (in my opinion) it's also MUCH better to question the grade and scrabble for points now as opposed to at the end of the term. --- In fact, in my syllabus, I state that all questions regarding grading on a midterm must be done within a week of the exam's return to students -- since that keeps the grading/scoring procedures fresh in my mind (since I do all my own grading at this time).

Thanks for the answers. I'll go to his office hours to ask about it.
