Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around a problem related to Lissajou's figures, specifically focusing on a scenario where the frequency ratio is 1:2. Participants express uncertainty regarding the phase difference, which is not specified in the problem, leading to confusion about the possible shapes of the resulting figure.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants question the implications of the unspecified phase difference on the resulting Lissajou's figure, considering options such as a parabola or a figure of eight. There is also a discussion about the orientation of the figure 8 and its relevance to the problem.

Discussion Status

The discussion is ongoing, with participants exploring different interpretations of the problem. Some have suggested that there may be multiple correct options, while others are trying to clarify the orientation of the figure 8 in relation to the problem's requirements.

Contextual Notes

There is a noted lack of information regarding the phase difference, which is critical to determining the correct shape of the Lissajou's figure. Participants are attempting to reconcile the given options with the information available.

Homework Statement

The problem in which I have difficulty has been posted as an attachment. It is based on Lissajou's figure. In the given problem, the ratio of the frequency is 1:2 but nothing has been mentioned about the phase difference. As far as my knowledge goes, the corresponding Lissajou's figure can either be a parabola or a figure of eight. The difficulty that I am facing is that, both the options are given. Is there any additional information that I have failed to notice in the question? Any help is most welcome.

If it were a figure 8, which way would the figure 8 be oriented?

As I read the question, three could be more than 1 correct option, but take good look
at that figure 8.

Do u mean that the figure 8 should have been aligned in the horizontal plane? Hence the more appropriate answer is the parabola. Am I heading in the right direction now?

It's not a parabola, but about the figure 8, yes.
