Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the choice between taking a foreign language or a foreign culture class as part of academic requirements. Participants explore the implications of each option, considering factors such as time commitment, interest in learning, and the effectiveness of language acquisition in an academic setting.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a preference for the foreign culture classes due to their less time-consuming nature compared to foreign language classes.
  • Another participant argues that meaningful language learning cannot occur in a purely academic setting, suggesting that it requires more effort than what is typically available in such environments.
  • A participant mentions having an open slot in their schedule and considers using it for a foreign language class, viewing it as an interesting way to fill their schedule.
  • Another participant advises that if math classes are demanding, it may be better to choose the least effortful option for a non-major class.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the effectiveness of learning a language in an academic setting, with some emphasizing the challenges involved. There is no consensus on which option is preferable, as opinions vary based on personal priorities and experiences.

Contextual Notes

Participants do not provide specific details on the nature of the foreign culture classes or the foreign language options, leaving some assumptions about their content and workload unaddressed.

at my school students need to take either 6 hours of "foreign culture" class or 6 hours of a foreign language.

Which do you think I should do? The foreign culture classes are way less time-consuming but I thought it would be interesting to learn a second language.

Thanks!

I don't think you can learn a language in any meaningful way in a purely academic setting, it is a lot more effort than that.

Well since I don't want to take 4 math classes at a time, I have an open slot in my scheudle each semester so I thought foreign language would be an interesting way to fill it.

What non-math class do you guys think I should take each semester?

Well if your math classes take up a lot of time, take whatever is the least amount of effort for a non-major class in my opinion.
