Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around identifying the best freely accessible global league tables that rank universities based on their performance in physics. Participants explore the concept of league tables, the metrics used for ranking, and their relevance to prospective PhD students in physics.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks recommendations for global league tables that assess university performance in physics.
  • Another participant expresses confusion regarding the term "league tables" and its meaning in this context.
  • A clarification is provided that league tables compare universities based on various metrics, particularly focusing on research performance in physics.
  • One participant mentions using the ARWU (Academic Ranking of World Universities) as a resource but advises caution in interpreting the rankings.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the definition of league tables or the best resources, indicating a lack of agreement on the topic.

Contextual Notes

Participants highlight the variability in metrics used for ranking universities, which may affect the interpretation of the league tables.

Hi there

Can anyone recommend what is the best freely accessible (global) league tables for University's performance in all fields of physics?

Thanks

I have no idea what you mean by "league" or "league tables" here.

by league tables I mean the tables that different groups have devised that compare the performance of universities by different metrics.
In the case of a physics league table, it would roughly speaking mean that those universities that do the best research and that are most prolific in physics research would be placed top of the table (just like a like a league table!) and universities that perform less well by these metrics would be placed lower down.

Presumably there are many different metrics by which one would chose how good a university is in the area of physics (eg. teaching undergrads, physics research, etc.). The metric that would must interest me is physics research as I wish to do a PhD in physics.

ARWU is the site I normally use. I would take everything I see from these websites with a grain of salt.
