Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the concept of gravitational unification with the other fundamental interactions at the scale of 10^-35 meters. Participants explore the reasoning behind this specific scale and the theoretical frameworks, such as String Theory, that propose mechanisms for unification.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants assert that there is no definitive knowledge regarding the unification of gravity at 10^-35 meters, describing it as a possibility to consider.
  • Others reference String Theory, which suggests that very small scale 'extra dimensions' could lead to unification, though they note the lack of experimental evidence supporting this theory.
  • A participant questions the rationale behind the specific choice of 10^-35 meters, suggesting that it seems arbitrary without a clear justification.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that the unification at this scale is not definitively established and remains a topic of speculation, with multiple competing views on the theoretical frameworks involved.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations in the discussion regarding the assumptions made about the scale of unification and the dependence on theoretical models like String Theory, which currently lack experimental validation.

How do physicists know that at 10-35m gravitation becomes unified with the other three interactions. How they came to their conclusion?

Please note it's not a homework question.

Nobody knows this. It's a possibility to be considered.

As far as I understand things, String Theory has an approach that involves very small scale 'extra dimensions' and that seems to achieve unification. But there's no experimental evidence for this so it's a more a matter of what takes your fancy. The human mind loves to see loose ends tied up and String Theory does just that.

Ok. But I think they should have a reason for that choice of 10 -35m. Why would it be a random value? Does not make sense.
