VOTE Photo Contest - A Moment Of Reflection (Group 2/2)

In summary, the conversation involves a group discussion on voting for the best image in a contest. The images being considered are Janus' reflection photo, Mech_Engineer's cabin photo, fi's nature and human artifice photo, FredGarvin's beaver lodge photo, shramana's landscape photo, and alex_caps' action shot. The group members discuss their individual choices and some mention their favorite themes and techniques in photography. One member asks about the significance of having seven trees in fi's photo, to which fi responds that it was not a conscious decision but may have been influenced by famous paintings featuring seven trees. The conversation ends with a discussion on the cultural significance of having an even or odd number of trees in a photo.

I chose Janus for this one, but it was really a tough choice.

I like Fred's beaver lodge. I have cabin fever and can't wait to get out fly-fishing on some little ponds.

These are tough. I went with alex because he literally caught a "moment". They're all great images, though. Janus' is very cool for catching four reflections. fi's is so still and clear that it would be difficult to know which end is up.

I voted for Fi's pic because it invokes my favorite theme of human artifice superimposed on nature. Plus it's just nice to look at.

It is so nice you noticed that, it is my favourite theme too. I like your photo too. Thanks.

Voted for fi too. The picture is very balanced and so real. Was it accidental or deliberate to have an ideal number of trees (seven) for the composition?

Andre, could you please elaborate on why seven in considered ideal? Thanks.

If you compose with tree groups, you find yourself ending up with seven as the most harmonic

Just count:

Not consciously, no - in fact I generally try to forget what I’ve learned about composition, etc., when taking photos, if possible ( maybe I do this too well, as I don’t remember being taught specifically about 7 trees, that is fascinating!) hoping to happen upon new ideas for painting, and otherwise just happy snaps.

Nevertheless, I cannot help having these images in the back of my mind (Monet’s poplars) when I see rows of trees like this. I remember being astounded by these compositions when I first saw them.

I hope that there are no Japanese Bonsai masters reading this forum. An even number of trees is wrong, although nobody is going to count if it's 61 or 62 and from the even numbers four trees is absolutely the worst as 4 is their number of the death.

Yes, I did forget bonsai and feng shui! I hope if there are Bonsai masters here they make exceptions for Impressionist masters!
