What are the practical aspects of conducting nuclear physics experiments?

I am a dilettante without training in physics who has a qualitative understanding of some basic principles in nuclear physics, but no mastery of the math involved. I am interested in the experimental side of this topic and am here to observe and learn about the concrete details involved in real experiments.
