What is the purpose of a seminar ?

What is the purpose of a "seminar"?

In academic environments, seminars are so common. People speak in seminars and people listen to others talking in seminars. Can anybody please tell me why seminars are important? Why is it important for a speaker and for a listener? Why do people speak in a seminar even if there may be only 5-6 people present to listen to the talk?

Some people like to socialize in person once in a while instead of sitting in front of a computer screen all the time. :wink:
