Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the relationship between the C1h and C1v point groups in crystallography, specifically addressing symmetry axes and the implications of 1-fold rotation. Participants explore the definitions and characteristics of these point groups.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about how to draw the symmetry axis for 1-fold rotation and questions the identity of C1h and C1v.
  • Another participant prompts consideration of what a 1-fold rotation signifies.
  • A different participant suggests that a 1-fold rotation implies no symmetry, questioning if this interpretation is correct.
  • A mod note indicates a post was moved, reiterating the question of why C1h is identical to C1v and also asking about the relationship between C1h and C2v.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion contains multiple competing views regarding the interpretation of 1-fold rotation and the identity of the point groups, indicating that the topic remains unresolved.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not reached a consensus on the definitions and implications of the point groups, and there are unresolved questions about symmetry axes and their representations.

How to draw the symettry axis for 1-fold rotation ? And why C1v is identical to C1h ?
Thanks

Think about what a 1-fold rotation means!

Oh ! I think 1-fold rotation means no symmetry so there is no axis of semmetry. Is that correct ?

Mod note: This post was moved from a different thread.
Why the point group C1h is identical to C1v ?
Why the point group C1h with horizontal twofold axis is identical to C2v ?
Thanks
