Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a new anti-spam scheme proposed by Microsoft, which involves a 'puzzle' that senders must solve before sending emails. The implications of this scheme on email communication and its effectiveness against spammers are explored.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses skepticism about the practicality of the scheme, questioning the time investment required for sending multiple emails.
  • Another participant references their own thoughts on anti-spam systems in a different forum, suggesting a broader interest in the topic.
  • A humorous remark is made regarding the meaning of the letter 'D' in a context not fully explained.
  • One participant claims that if probabilistic spam filters were widely used, spammers would go out of business, implying a belief in the effectiveness of such filters.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not appear to reach a consensus on the effectiveness or practicality of the proposed anti-spam scheme, and multiple viewpoints regarding spam filtering methods are presented.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the feasibility of the time investment for senders and the effectiveness of different spam filtering methods remain unaddressed.

Microsoft came with a new scheme to slow spammers from sending millions of e-mails. It sounds strange to me, but they want to implement a 'puzzle' which needs to be solved, before the email can be sent. This takes about 10-20 secs. This time investment is on the sender's side, and thus the amount of email that can be sent at a time is limited. 8000 messages a day at most, apparently.

I wonder what happens if I want to sent an email to a bunch of friends of mine, I'd have to wait one minute for three friends? Nice..

I always wondered what the D stood for.. :P

Did you know that if anybody used bysononian(probabalistic, sp?) spam filters (or any), all the spammers would go out of buisiness; ie Bankrupt (read: No spam).
