Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the search for a chat program that allows users to typeset mathematical expressions using LaTeX or a similar system in real-time. Participants explore the feasibility and potential applications of such a tool for scientists, mathematicians, and engineers.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant, Nille, inquires about chat programs that support LaTeX for live mathematical typesetting.
  • Another participant suggests a specific link to a LaTeX web service, but it does not meet Nille's request for a chat client.
  • Nille clarifies the need for a chat client similar to ICQ, MSN, or IRC that supports LaTeX.
  • A participant expresses the idea that developing such a program could be a significant advancement for the scientific community.
  • Nille further questions the availability of a TeX rendering library, specifically looking for a renderer rather than a compiler.
  • Another participant responds that they could not find any TeX rendering libraries available.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the potential usefulness of a chat program with LaTeX support, but no consensus exists on the availability of such tools or libraries.

Contextual Notes

The discussion highlights a lack of existing solutions and the need for specific functionalities in chat applications, but does not resolve the search for a suitable program or library.

Hi!
Does anyone know of a chat program where you can use latex or something similar to typeset math in a chat? Like this forum, but live...

Thanks in advance,
Nille

Thanks for responding!
However, I was more thinking of a chat client, like ICQ, MSN, IRC or similar.

Thanks again,
Nille

I did a google search and came up with nothing. It is a very good idea. Perhaps if someone wrote such a program, it would be the next killer app for scientist, mathematicians and engineers..

That is to bad! But is there a TeX rendering library available somewhere? Not a tex2dvi compiler, but a renderer... for java, perhaps?

Sorry, couldn't find anything of that sort.
