This article is as good as any tutorial on the physics of negative index of refraction. It was co-written by John Pendry, who has been credited for inventing/discovering the metamaterial that exhibits this property.

Sounds like you have an old version of acrobat reader. Some new files cannot be opened by the older versions. You can update to a newer version from the adobe website for free.
