Ideas for a Quick Physical Chemistry project

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around generating ideas for a quick computational project in physical chemistry, specifically using Spartan P-Chem software. The focus is on finding a project that aligns closely with physics concepts, such as energy levels and potential wells.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks project ideas that connect physical chemistry with physics, mentioning topics like energy levels and particle in a box.
  • Another participant questions the lack of responses regarding the use of Spartan software in computational chemistry.
  • A third participant shares a link to a Wikipedia article on computational chemistry, suggesting it may provide useful topics related to physical chemistry and quantum chemistry.
  • The original poster expresses that the Wikipedia resource sparked interest in electron holes and plans to consult their professor for further guidance.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not appear to have reached a consensus on specific project ideas, and multiple viewpoints on potential topics remain open for exploration.

Contextual Notes

The discussion reflects a reliance on external resources for topic generation and highlights the time constraint of a few weeks for project completion.

Who May Find This Useful

Students or individuals interested in physical chemistry projects, particularly those with a focus on computational methods and connections to physics.

My professor asked us to think of ideas to do a quick computational project in physical chemistry (he says quick because there are only a few weeks of school left). I will be using the student edition of the Spartan P-Chem software. I really don't have any idea what I should do. I prefer something as closely related to physics as possible given that I am a Physics major. Maybe something related to energy levels, particle in a box, potential well stuff? I don't know. Ideas anyone?

Has no one ever used Spartan or something to do computational chemistry?

I'm not much help, but the computational chemistry write-up at wikipedia.org is interesting for me:

Also, they have a pretty good list of topics in physical chemistry, including quantum chemistry. Do you see anything in the wikipedia lists that looks like a good candidate for your project?

Hmmm. Actually, I think that may have helped. The part where it relates it to solid state physics had a few links that kind of sparked my interest. Electron holes sounded good. I'll probably ask my professor about it so see if he can suggest something specific that I can do in a reasonable amount of time. Thanks!
