Any other football fans here?
Who do you think will win the upcoming Euro tournament?
Which players will shine?
I'm having trouble picking a winner but Italy, France, Germany and Spain are my top 4.
I may be wrong but I believe it won't be possible for Italy and France to face off in the final as they are both in Group C. I'd love too see them duke it out again.
My money's on Germany. I think Portugal are one to watch, too.

I will be excited to watch Portugal, but my bet is on Germany or Italy.
I am excited to see Euro 2008...I haven't seen a single football match since the World cup 2006..I am looking forward to this cup!

Romania has been rumored to be a dark horse for this competition, however they are in the group of death with Italy, France and Netherlands so I doubt they will go far.
Also one of their club teams was just fined and what not for corruption

Usually, when a player on the field is injured, a player will kick the ball out of play even if the injured player is on the other team. In that case, the team with the injured player would toss the ball to an opponent since they had the ball when the injury occurred.
How about this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goSnvCpG6aQ&feature=related) where the player botches the intentionally out of bounds part? To be honest, I'm not sure what he was doing, but he obviously did it because of the injured player on the field (or because he was watching the asst ref).
Should the team with the injured player try to score or just tap the ball to the goalkeeper.

And, speaking of penalties, this penalty was perfect (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4F8e6mq3yqs&NR=1). He obviously practiced a lot.
Can you spot the infractions? The third is hilarious as the player is obviously thinking "Oh, crap!" as soon as he does it (and he gets a card to go with it). Check out the position of the red players on the fourth kick.

I know he was caught years back, however, now Chelsea wants to fine him for the loss in money from his transfer fees to the tune of 9.6 million # which is roughly $20 million.
Chelsea paid for him, he failed drug test so they axed him thus he signed to Juventus on free transfer. It's a tough call legally you'd have to know all about what he signed in fine print on his contract.
Anyone watching tonights match? I know portugal are only playing turkey, but they look very good! Simao, ronaldo and deco look like they can do some damage in midfield, and theres still nani and others on the bench. Their defence doesn't look too bad either!

Yes I'm watching. Portugal are looking good. The earlier match was a bit tame but I blame the ref for that.

Yes it was an amazing strike from that position, but what a save.
Nice game. Both Portugal goals were beautiful. Most of the Portugal shots that didn't connect were beautiful.
Interesting match in the end. It was a bit flat in places but Portugal produced some good moments and two great goals. I must admit that I thought Moutinho had ruined the chance when he tried that turn in the penalty area but it worked out nicely.
I can't believe Czech Republic beat Switzerland, i was disappointed. I think Frei was playing a little selfish, always shooting when getting the ball. Yakin came in and think they immediately started doing better.
I saw two handballs from the same player, one a penalty in my opinion. The Czech are playing badly, very slow and clunky. I like the way the Swiss were playing.
I think Portugal will get some revenge when they meet the Czech team on wednesday, make up for the quarter final elimination in 96 with that amazing goal from Poborsky (i was around, i don't forget this stuff :P).
Portugal did well, nice game.

I'm looking forward to Germany - Poland tomorrow. There has been some controversy around the match regarding some picture put together by the polish media, which the German people are supposedly demanding an apology for - you know the usual.

Because instead of playing the beautiful game, they do their best to turn it into the ugly game.
Typically when i think of Croatia i think of pleasant footbal, but i haven't watched them recently. I like the fact that they managed to eliminate England without being required to (though i would like to have the english around of course).
Wow, the Netherlands destroyed Italy. They have a great team. After the recent games i'm glad this one came along, it was getting really boring.

It's too early to say, but I think the Netherlands are going to take the cup. Their team is a level above the competition.
Right now I'm missing the Spain match, but I don't think we can tell anything about the overall quality of the Spanish squad because of the relative ease of the group they're in. But hopefully they'll have a good run this time -- I was sad to see them leave the World Cup after the second round (even though I was supporting France!).

Villa is looking good, isn't he. This looks like game over now.. I think Russia could have got back in the game had Spain not scored a second.
Spain look too shaky at the back to win it for me. Although having said that, they'll probably make me look foolish. I still think the Netherlands have been the best team so far by a long long way.

It was a good match and in the end Spain won easily. I still think they need a stronger back four if they want to win against any of the better teams. Lets hope Spain can keep the goals coming though. :smile:

I never would have imagined that outcome from Spain.
Good show though, looks like we are going to have a great tourney. Spain, Germany, Netherlands and Portugal are on form. Some other teams look alright.
I am a bit displeased with France only drawing Romania.
I root for them over anyone but they weren't playing the most exciting ball.
They certainly have the talent, I mean people like trezeguet, Flamini and Ben Arfa did not even make the cut.
I think if Benzema and Ribery get in form and Henry gets back then Frances offense will be set, their defense is already stacked. If Ribery can start commanding the midfield like he does at Bayern Munich then France will be a formidable opponent for anyone.

Also, I agree that Spain needs a stronger back 4, Puyol is a class player, Ramos gives up too many bad fouls.

I dunno about other two, but Trezeguet plays brilliantly for his national side. I'm not quite sure why he wasn't taken!

I think they should bench Henry. He hogs the ball, messes up a lot, misses opportunities, is a diver, etc. I've never liked him. France certainly has more than one player who could fill up his position and do a better job...

Today's games: Czech Rep v Portugal was quite entertaining.. I guessed 3-1 before the game.. it's a shame I didn't put a bet on!

Football can't become infested with replays: next thing we'll have breaks every five minutes for adverts. The conditions are the same for every team.
Oh, and as I'm typing this: italy 0-1 romania: what a mistake by the italian defence!

Compared to the NBA which applies different rules to players depending on star status, I'll take the old-fashioned FIFA/UEFA approach.

It doesn't have to be like the NBA. Maybe something like they have in Tennis? And teams can have only 1 replay request per half, for instance. That won't affect the game too greatly, in my opinion.
It would be ridiculous to introduce replays into football. It just doesn't seem right at all. In the end the good decisions and bad ones should even out.

Brilliant game by the Dutch. Even though the French woke up, they could only watch the Dutch whirl wind pass by!
They're playing a very Brazilian game where it's a bit desperate at the back at times but they have so many easy goals at the front. Long may it continue. :smile:
Wow, the Dutch were good. I guessed at 4-1 Holland as well as predicting correctly the portugal/czech rep score the other night. I should start betting on these games!!

On the flipside, Ribery is really showing a lot of talent and skill. He has what it takes to go a long way.

The Turkey-Czech game looked intense! I have no idea why it wasn't shown live in Ontario... Instead we had to suffer through the pointless Portugal-Swiss game.
An even more exciting finish for Turkey. Wow! What a stupid red card at the end (not undeserved; a stupid thing to do). Turkey will be in big trouble in the next round with the suspensions from this game.

My wife and I started watching the Turkey-Czech game at the beginning of the second half, and we were both cheering for Turkey. When they went down two goals, my wife lost hope, and she started doing housework. She missed all of Turkey's goals.

It was one of the games of the tournament so far with a lot riding on the match for both teams. The Czechs really handed that game away though. Well done turkey.

Yes. Once you give a penalty there, the red card is automatic, since he was the last defender and the striker had a goal scoring opportunity.
Abidal was the last man and definitely interfered with Toni's chance of scoring so that is an automatic red.

But in some cases, the yellow is shown...some thought it was a bit severe from the ref's part. BTW, who else thinks that the French coach is lame?
While its true that some yellows have been shown in those circumstances, the rules are clear that if the last man denies a goal soring opportunity then it should be a straight red.

I agree with red card. Disagree w/ Domenech being lame.
I think he needs to make more of his young talent. this is the end of an era for Les Bleus , however they have some incredible young talent in Nasri, Gomis and Benzema.
I hope those players can work to become as good as they possibly can and not sell out to a large contract to waste away on bench or reserve squad somewhere.
I definitely did not expect turkey to go through, props to them. I am excited for Port / Ger game as well as Spain / Italy (hope Spain annihilates them)
2-1 to germany (vs. portugal) at half-time. Very entertaining match.

In 2002 Turkey was very impressive. I'm not sure how they are this year, but recently those two national soccer teams seem to have comparable pedigrees.

I don't think so, but the teams have been looking to make more chances in the last few minutes. Still, I do like a good penalty shootout, especially when I'm not supporting either of the teams!

Turkey is major underdog against Germany, look at all the (dare i say "key") players who are out.
Germany should dispatch them easily.

Germany does manage to pull the occasional hickup like the loss to Romania in '98, and Austria in '78, or East Germany in '74. Germany also failed to make it out of the groups in euro '00 or '04.
That said, Turkey is hurt and tired while Germany are coming off of a huge win over Portugal.

What the hell just happened?!
This was a very poorly officiated match. That withdrawn yellow card highlighted it. A referee should NEVER show a card unless he really means it.
NB: I am not saying the ref threw the game. Russia deserved that win. The center ref just did a bad job. He repeatedly called fouls that weren't and missed fouls that were. Russia should have had a PK earlier. That was a blatant takedown in the box.
The Turks have done it again: scored a goal in the last few minutes. They'll go on and win this now... unless it goes to penalties, then you've got to tip the Germans!

90 minutes. Germany had the lead for all of 7 of them, 10 if they manage to hold on to their lead.
Well what a match. Turkey certainly don't know when they are beaten. They should of perhaps won.

I don't understand how a 5'7" 140lbs defender can compete (excel) on the world stage in soccer? I'm 6 foot 160lbs and I get mowed over by bigger guys all the time it seems in pickup games.
You just gotta be fast and agile, soccer is the one game where size doesn't matter much cause you gotta be fast and agile or you get burnt.

I saw Turkey and they were great, you know they had alot of their important players out due to injuries and suspensions. I think if they had a full squad, they could have won.

If they're a full back or wing back then speed is more important, but centre backs tend to be a lot bigger.

Size matters for centre backs and strikers. But it doesn't for wingers and side backs and midfielders
Portugal had problems against Germany because they were smaller, got overpowered. It is hard to get a header over a tall defender. Never the less you see many of the worlds best players are small. I think intelligence is a real big part of the picture, you gotta be a genus to make such great passes with a split second to react.
Germany are a huge side, but Turkey still managed to be superior in the air for most of the game. Its mainly all about timing and a good football brain.
I almost thought the match would go into extra time until Lahm squeezed in the winning goal! :biggrin:
So, the final between Germany and Spain is about to start. Both sides look quite strong, but I think Germany will bag this one. It'll be close though and, hopefully, a good game!
