That's the kind of electrical interference that you can pick up on your communication or IO lines (or power lines) from nearby lightning hits, or from other noise sources like motors. There is a standard test for immunity against EFTs on both your IO lines and power lines. A typical test standard is EN (or IEC) 61000-4-4:
