Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the performance capabilities of the new Apple desktop computers, particularly in comparison to existing personal computers. Participants explore aspects such as clock speeds, software compatibility, and overall usability in various contexts, including gaming and professional applications.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants highlight claims made by Apple regarding the new dual 2GHz PowerMac being faster than a dual 3GHz Xeon machine, supported by benchmarks and tests.
  • There is mention of the new desktops' capability to run both 32-bit and 64-bit software, with some participants noting that 64-bit software can enhance performance by utilizing more memory, contingent on developers recompiling their applications.
  • Concerns are raised about software support for Macs, with one participant expressing skepticism about the Mac's ability to compete in this area despite its hardware advancements.
  • Another participant counters that most necessary software is available for Macs, but acknowledges limitations in gaming performance and availability compared to PCs.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the performance and software support of the new Apple desktops, indicating that multiple competing perspectives remain without a clear consensus.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include uncertainty about the timeline for software updates from Apple and the extent to which existing applications will be optimized for the new hardware.

The new clock speeds and other changes mean that Apple will be offering "the world's fastest personal computer," Jobs said. Jobs showed both benchmarks and Photoshop tests that illustrate the new dual 2GHz PowerMac outperforming a dual 3GHz Xeon machine

Just released.

The new Apple desktops will also be capable of running 32-bit software--the kind found on desktops today--and 64-bit software, which is used by high-end workstations. 64-bit software can take advantage of more memory, which improves performance, but developers have to recompile their operating systems and applications for that to happen. Adobe said it would recompile its software to take advantage of the capability and release products with this feature at about the same time that the new Macs emerge. It is unclear when Apple will perform a similar task.

unfortunately, it is still a mac, and no matter how far advanced it is, will lack in software support. Perhaps they'll fix that problem, but I doubt it.

Then again, with that much power one should be able to emulate a PC to a decent degree. Interesting.

I use a mac...

You can find any software you need for the mac that you can find for the PC (excluding custom built business finance software and the like).

Unfortunately, the mac does lack when it comes to games. Game performance is okay, but not as well as PC (given the fact that mac games are usually pc titles ported over) and there are far less to choose from.
