Correct me if I'm wrong, but you were interested in attending the University of Chicago to study mathematics? This method of learning is being implemented there for various courses (including Calculus and Analysis I think). I have only experienced this method on a small scale, but it is highly effective in stimulating the independent thinking and problem solving essential to research mathematicians.
