SUMMARY

Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC) are two fundamental types of electrical current. DC maintains a constant polarity, allowing current to flow in a single direction. In contrast, AC alternates its polarity, reversing the direction of current flow, typically at a frequency of 60 Hz in the United States. Understanding these differences is essential for applications in electrical engineering and household power systems.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic understanding of electrical concepts
  • Familiarity with electrical circuits
  • Knowledge of frequency measurement
  • Awareness of household electrical systems
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the applications of AC and DC in modern electronics
  • Explore the advantages and disadvantages of AC versus DC
  • Learn about the conversion methods between AC and DC
  • Investigate the role of transformers in AC power distribution
USEFUL FOR

Electrical engineers, students studying electronics, and anyone interested in understanding the principles of electrical current and its applications in everyday life.

Hello;

What is alternate current and direct current? (AC and DC)

Thanks.

With direct current, the polarity remains the same. In other words the current always flows in one direction.

With alternating current, the polarity alternates. In other words the direction of current flow alternates between flowing one direction and the other. With typical house current this happens at 60 cycles per second in the U.S.

Thanks!
