long story short, they don't like the idea of biologists being able to patent the genes they use for their research.
That story is 9 years old, talk about old news..
The discussion was sparked by the publishing of the first draft of the human genome in 2000. Recently several gene patents were invalidated in court: Judge Invalidates Human Gene Patent (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/30/business/30gene.html)Judge Sweet, however, ruled that the patents were “improperly granted” because they involved a “law of nature.” [..]
The case could have far-reaching implications. About 20 percent of human genes have been patented, and multibillion-dollar industries have been built atop the intellectual property rights that the patents grant.

oops, my bad. This link was just posted today on a social bookmarking site so i assumed it was something new.
